Baby birds at petland

I was in a petland the other day and went to visit their birds. They had two baby white bellied caiques and two baby senegals. Both species were not for sale yet but we're out on the floor. One of the senegals snuggled right up and was super sweet. However, the two caiques were screaming their little heads off. I've never heard a caique scream like those two babies. One of the employees said that they were still being handfed. Was it right for them to go out on the floor already? It seemed rather early.

Many, many years ago...I managed a pet land. We use to put the hand feeding birds on the floor but customers were not allowed to pick them up. A lot has changed since the early nineties. Each store is independently owned, with its own set of "rules"

They might have been hungry, but I agree those babies shouldn't be out on the floor. It's too easy for them to get sick.

Not to be harsh, but its called Marketing. Can't sell what you don't have on the floor. And the best way to pre-sell baby birds is to get them out in front of the Customers. They are Not For Sale, but we will take a Deposit!

Whether its a Big Box Store, the Corner Pet Store or some but not all Breeders. It's the sad reality of the industry.

Hey, since Dogs are different Breeds and Parrots are different Species, shouldn't Parrot Breeders be called Parrot Species-ers? A moment of Humor in an otherwise Dark Subject. :D

Thanks for the input. I felt kinda bad for them, they seemed scared. It was loud and busy and the cage wasn't even against a wall.

On another note, 3000$ for a white bellied caique is a little much, no?

Depends on where you live! Price is commonly based on what the Market will bare and the number of competitors in that Market.

Since, you did not provide a Location, there is no way to know since we haven't a clue where in this huge World you live. Different prices in different regions.

Canada, sorry!

I sneak across the boarder from time to time to see Customers in Toronto. There is a big Mall on the North side of town that has a Pet Store. I always stop to see the Parrots. The cost of Parrots at that Store is fairly close to 2.5 to 3 times the cost of that Parrot in Michigan. Having said that, their Parrots are always very healthy and very Socialized.

I find that some chew toys are less expensive then in Michigan and others about the same cost. So, I will bring some home from time to time. Every time, my dear Wife will ask what did you get me? Same answer every time: Like you would like anything I would choose for you? You will need to understand that I am color blind in a specific range that is also the range that she enjoys.
