Baby Amazon not walking after nail trim - please help

The nail clip should not effect her walking, especially if they didn't clip them too close and no blood is visible. I'm worried about injury or splay leg due to not perching. The way you describe her not laying natural ,worries me..............

That is exactly what I was thinking when reading this thread. The nails look OK to me too. I wouldn't stress all my attention to nail clipping. I would check what else could be wrong if things don't improve soon. It's such a sweet little baby...I hope it's feeling better and perching in a day or so.
I would go to the vet who clipped the nails and demand some answers, or if you feel really bad about this ver just go to another one.
I wish all is OK with lil one really soon.

Hey guys,

Some updates for everyone. While my wife and I work, my sister in law takes care of the baby throughout the day and hand feeds her. She last ate at 6 am with us and I wanted to know how she was doing throughout the day and as of 1pm she had not eaten since that morning so I got worried and ended up leaving work to take her to a different vet.

This vet was definitely much more professional, nails looked fine and there were no signs of broken bones nor was anything dislocated. He said there is a possibilty of a sprain as you guys mentioned and gave a shot of anti-inflammatory + some medicine to take home and administer orally 1x per day and will follow up with me on weds.

After taking the baby home she ate hungrily (at about 4:30, so no food for about ~10 hours and the crop was so empty it looked inverted). We will be feeding in an hour or two from now and hoping for some good results then.

She seems to be doing better but it looks like she is feeling pain in her left claw as it is the one she is consistently clinching. The vet tested her for perching/gripping power in her claws and she definitely has control over them so no nerve damage but is not grabbing as hard as she can be. If there is no improvement by Weds. she will have to go in for some imaging tests.

This vet mentioned that the other vet was wrong to say its a female based on looking at the body, so we will definitely be needed to determine the sex after this ordeal is over with.

Thanks for your support everyone, I am hoping for some progress, it should take a day for the meds to kick in as far as I was told.

The only true way to tell sex is with a DNA test. I would take the first vet off your list and stay with the second!

Thanks for the update, we hope everything is back to normal soon. believe it or not we get very attached to these birds we never meet. please keep us informed and let us know if we're helping.many of us have had our birds for many years and know what they mean to us. I hope we helped in some small way.

Thanks guys, It has been really hard for us as we are already both very attached to this baby even though she has only been with us for a few weeks. I really hope we can get over this soon and get back to the great progress we were having. Will definitely keep everyone updated, your replies have been very encouraging and I appreciate all of your time, energy, and support greatly!

Some more updates, the bay is doing better today and actually walking slowly without falling over. Her appetite is also getting better. I am guessing the anti inflammatory mess are kicking in. We still have a while to go until she's back to her old self but this is definitely a welcoming sign.

Meanwhile going to start introducing some pellets and fruits/veggies to home.

Henpecked do you have any advice for weaning: what to start with and what foods to offer/sizes. Also are ceramic "hamster" type bowls safe for her to introduce some water into the environment?

Also does anyone have any feedback regarding Zupreme pellets, i picked up a bag at the vet.

Thanks everyone!

Henpecked will give you his answer but for what's worth, I would not use ceramic, it breaks into shards and can be dangerous to birds (especially large ones that can pick up the bowls and bang them). I use paper plates for their food (but I don't feed pellets, I feed fresh food) and stainless steel for their water.

I would not use Zupreem. As I said, I don't feed pellets but if I had no other option, I would use TOPs and no other.

My vet and breeder recommends Zupreme so if it's good for them, it's good for my birds. I would recommend the naturals because the dye in the other varieties discolor the feces as well as your carpets if gotten wet. The fruit blend has sugar which birds like so that will help your baby to adjust to it. You can always change to a different pellet in the future. Right now you just want the bird to get use to a pelleted diet.

I feed a mix of different pellets, Zoopreem and the different flavors a huge part of it. I believe that a mix of brands and flavors help keep the birds happy. I know I would hate eating the same stuff everyday!

Just read this thread... SO sorry to hear of your ordeal!!!!1
WOW.. what an incompetent vet! I am NO WHERE near being a vet, but a bird that young I would not do ANYTHING like clipping nails, or even clipping wings (don't quote me on that though).

I am glad to hear that your little guy IS making progress though! What a sweet bird!

I used to feed my guys zupreen, then I heard that Harrison's is better, I do like the variety of different foods though.
I also read that IF you use Harrison's, no other food should be used (like fruits/vegs... just for treats), but I can't see how just the pellets would provide all the nutrients... there is alot of opinions on this...

In feeding your young guy... PLEASE test the temperature of the food!!! I know someone that had a Yellow Naped baby, and killed it because he heated the formula in a sauce pan on the stove. The surface temp in the pan was luke warm, BUT he drew the formula from the middle of the pan AND IT WAS VERY HOT!!!! The bird struggled but fed it anyway... afterwards he tested it and it stung.. so he had burned the crop...
PLEASE check the temp of the food FIRST!!!

Keep us updated as to your progress! Hoping for a good recovery! Enjoy your baby!

Oh my gosh, I can't even begin to imagine!!

I FIRMLY believe in a thermometer for this very reason. The formula should be fed between 103-107 degrees. Stirring it well, and moving the thermometer around, making sure it's evenly heated. :)

Thanks for the support pompnabill and jerseywendy :) we are definitely very thorough and check th temperature multiple times and test the formula from the syringe on our skin before feeding it.

I put some of the zupreme pellets in with the baby today and s/he picked them up and played with them. What fruits and veggies do you guys begin weaning young babies with?

P.S. today there was a lot of progress, the baby now clutches at our fingers with her claws as we hold her and the walking is slowly getting better. I am wondering how long it will take for things to get back to normal?

When my baby Conures start to wean I offer SOAKED PELLETS (I use Zupreem). I let a few pellets soak in a bit of hot water and serve them once they are mushy to make the transition easier. Eventually I soak them in less and less water so that they're progressively harder.
You just need to replace the soaked pellets at each feed because once they sit for a while, they get nasty, so only soak the amount for 1 feeding at a time.

Glad baby is doing better ! :)

Things are definitely going well, the baby was flying today for a little bit. We left the container open for a few minutes and when we turned around she had flown out. We let the baby practice flying safely on the carpet, it was pretty exciting to watch.

Going to be moving her out of the tupperware this weekend, do you guys transition your parrots to an adult size cage right away or do you start with a smaller cage at first. The baby is about 9wks now

Have thought about getting a harness ? Now is the time to accustom her to it. When they get older it's much harder. When i'm weaning baby amazons i use a ferret cage, they can't fall far,LOL. If your baby is flying well a larger cage would be OK. Maybe keep the perches low and don't hang too much junk (toys) . I'd also get a perch stand or play gym area for her. It's tough to keep them from following you all over the house when they're that young, but it will help.

Thanks henpecked. She is flying decently, we left her unattended for a minute and she flew across the room to me. I am surprised how fast this is happening, we've only had her for 3 weeks or so and I believe she was 4 weeks when we got her but I guess I was wrong about her age must be closer to 8-9 weeks instead, she's fully feathered except for a few grey baby feathers behind her wings on lower back.

Henpecked what type of foods work best for you when weaning? Also I was wanting to sex the baby eventually, how long should I wait to get the DNA test...don't want to traumatized her too much.

Also when learning to fly do you encourage taking them out and encouraging them, I have to be constantly around to catch her if something goes wrong and don't want her to get hurt. I turned my back away for a second and she flew across room to the kitchen island, failed to land on it and grabbed edge with her beak and I had to catch her really fast to avoid her falling.

We will definitely get a harness is there a particular one you suggest? Also would you mind sharing what cages your adult amazons are in, I'd really like to get one soon and save money. I will go with a smaller cage with low perches for now until she is flying really well. We also need a small travel one as my sister in law is feeding the bird while I am at work during th day.
