many of my finch babies are hatching right now, in 6 of my cages.
Unfortunately most of the babies are being tossed out, ugggg :(, my gouldians are tossing them like nothing, and my star finches are doing the same

I have a pair of society finches and were fostering a baby star finch that had been tossed out of it's nest just last week. they had accepted it, and were feeding it for over a week, but I hadn't heard any chirps since yesterday so I checked the nest, and it had died.
No sooner do I discover that, I look up at my canary cage, and they had tossed a baby. It was lying motionless on the bottom of the cage(it's there first clutch), with a heavy heart I went to pick it up and it was alive!...seemed ok too.
my other pair of canaries are feeding their babies, so I took a chance and put the little one in with Mango's babies. She is an awesome mother to her chicks, but the question remains will she accept and feed the baby. Keeping my fingers crossed, if she rejects it, I'll be hand feeding it with open arms ;)

I know nothing about finches or canaries, but a couple of years back.....maybe longer than that, I read where a breeder (don't even remember what he/she bred) that had partitioned between the cages, so one nest couldn't see what the other nest was doing, because they had chicks thrown out of nests.....

Their theory was that some parents were trying to keep up with the Joneses & thought it was the thing to do, so out went junior or sis.....

Although is had been a lot of work to re-arrange everything, the trick worked, I believe.....

In the same discussion there were suggestions of limiting activity in the bird room, to less than normal, but the poster went with partitioning off the nests.....

interesting, I will definately keep that in mind, and is worth a try. thanks weco.

I cant imagine how stressful this must be :( please keep us posted. It must be very hard to feed a baby finch.

I hope you are able to resolve this. I met a lady who hand fed one of her finches, and it became bonded with humans, and didn't want anything to do with the other finches! It sounded super cute.

What weco says makes sense which I usually separate everyone during nesting, BUT sometimes it is the parents! My zebra finches were alone! They still manage to kill their chicks....My pairs from years ago, none of them ever did that.....So these two were banned from ever to nest again.

I use to have all my zebras all in one large flight cage together,3 pairs. they all tossed their chicks so I separated them into individual cages. they stopped tossing their chicks.
I think part of the problem is my pairs are all young and inexperienced, but are all in their own cages.
On a good note my gouldian pair that is known for tossing chicks, are raising one or two of their babies!!
