I’m getting my first macaw and cannot decided between greenwing or blue and gold, I would love some input.

I think looks-wise blue and gold wings for me, but the red on a greenwing is just stunning

Personality-wise, blue and golds tends to be more cuddly and playful, but also more grumpy and unpredictable, is that true?

People have described greenwings as being more sweet, gentle giants”and independent.

I have met a few greenwings, some are really friendly, others are kinda scary and mean, I wouldn’t trust them near my face

I’m having a really hard time choosing, what do you guys think?

I would prefer one which loves attention and cuddles but isn’t too stand off ish.

I know this all varies from bird to bird, but as a general rule of thumb. : )

GW all the way, they are awesome!

GW all the way, they are awesome!

Sounds like a biased opinion to me. <GRIN!!>

We have a B&G, which is also an awesome companion!

A lot is determined by the personality of the individual bird but also the interaction between the guardian and the bird. IMHO!!

Why don't you go visit available birds of both species and hold out until something about one of them reaches out and grabs your heart?

Kicks Az in the shin (YES I'm biased)

Plax too for being intelligent & correct :p

He usually does.........dang thinking people :)

I put neither, Although I love both the blue and gold and greenwing I prefer the blue throated macaw :D

Random Trivia - Experts originally(1) thought the blue-throat was a juvenile of the Blue and Gold macaw :p or vice versa

(1 - Not sure how long ago though)

I also put neither simply because you have not listed any previous bird experience or back ground on yourself like Lifestyle, busy, hectic or casual and quiet. Do you own your own home or rent, if ownership, how close are your neighbors? They will be inheriting this bird too.

Do you have any previous ex-large bird experience? Are you willing to commit the next 70 years of your life to this bird? These sort of questions would need to be answered before I were to respond to the poll.

I've probably mentioned it on here somewhere on the forum but I'll put it here as well.
You know how I settled on a GW for our 2nd bird?? ......My breeder (you have to remember we were neighbors before so we're pretty close)
She called me up one day and told me she had a baby that I "needed" to raise.
Now she absolutely knows how much of a Zon freak I am ($%&& traitor Zons that love my wife and not me :20: ).
She then proceeded to tell me about the 3 GW babies that had just hatched, and I'm thinking to myself; I know the parents rather well, as in they are freakin' HUGE and NOT social at all! After talking with her a little longer she had me convinced, and the rest as they say is history. :D
Now the 1st Zon, Halo, was pretty much done behind my back. :11:
The wife had been talking to the breeder without me knowing what the "subject matter" was, and the next thing I know the wife tells me we're getting a YNA. (or SHE was actually) Anyway, that year was the most clutches our friend had ever had so she had a LOT of babies (more than she's ever had in one season before) so we had a lot of birds to choose from. I think the only reason we got the 2nd GW is because the wife was able to see the bond ReaRea & I had and also how very friendly Rea was. I think the only way we'll get another one is if it's something I just can't refuse, like a Tres Marie or a Magna (a Military or Buffon's comes to mind as well )

1st time holding my ReaRea at the breeder's when I got her :D
