Hi all,
I have posted in the general info section but I'm wanting some more species-specific feedback.

I am looking at potentially getting a Lovebird, I have previously had a canary before but that's about the extent of my experience with birds. I'm in the gathering info phase at this point and just want as much info as I can get.

I love what I have seen of Lovebird personalities but I will be living in a small apartment and I really don't want to disturb my neighbours especially as one of them does shift work and sleeps in the day.

I'm just wondering if I can get some idea of people who have kept them in small apartments? What their typical noise level is? If there are things that particularly set them off and likewise things that relax them?

I work from home so would be there for company 24/7.

Thanks so much!

In my personal opinion, I think lovebirds are quite loud. They have a very loud piercing shrill chirps that really can resonate throughout the entire house. Though if you are at home all day they will be quieter but will still make some kind of noise.... is there a local pet store you can go visit on eat and listen to?

if you are wanting a quiet bird that won't upset the neighbors, I'd go with either a budgie or a cockatiel.

Agreeing with our Bean. The lovebirds I have known are not loud all day, but at dawn and dusk, they do pipe up. i would go with a budgie. They are all parrot, wonderful mimics, beautiful, and trainable, and portable, and I have known of several who thrive in an apartment.
Wouldn't you love to have a little guy like this in your life? I'm talking about the bird, although the guy seems sweet, too!

I love budgies.
Let's see what members think...

P.S.
Kummerspeck!

Another P.S.
A female cockatiel is usually said to be quiet.

I would certainly suggest a budgie! They're adorable and have a ton of personality in a small sized feathered body. It might be that they're one of the most common, popular pet birds that they've lost their charm in the eyes of some, being seen as typical birds, but given some time and attention they can prove to be amazing little companions.
Cockatiels are wonderful too, but they produce a powder down that makes everything very dusty. If you're not asthmatic and keep things clean that shouldn't be to much of an issue. They are notably louder though, in my experience anyway- though I've only every owned males.

All the lovebirds I've ever come across have been fairly quiet, but that may have just have been timing. Even my budgies and cockatiel get noisy at dawn.

I adore lovebirds. I had my boomer for a short time and we lost her to an open door. She was a extremely nimble flyer. I don't feel like she was ever loud enough for my apartment neighbors to hear, but had an intense personality. she would like... yell... at the other birds but it wasn't screaming or anything. She made very very cute sounds, I loved listening to her warble and squabble. She would grab the water bowl with her beak and lift it up and drop it over and over. liked to tap her beak on things. I think they are generally great apartment pets but I have only had the one. They will be different from bird to bird. Here's a video of boomer playing with my gf. Well, trying to bite her. She was quite nippy to others besides me.

I sure did love that girl.

oh, and to expand on the tiel thing, I have two cockatiels and neither are ever loud. Well, my boy will call and call and call non stop if he wants out but it's just kinda annoying lol. I think tiels are the best to keep in apartment personally, and they are much cheaper than other medium sized parrots (vet costs can be high though with any bird). Budgies are quiet but make a lot of chatter, very cute chatter kinda like mumbling to themselves lol. I could listen to them warble all day long.

I have no experience owning a Lovebird, but the ones that I have heard have also been quite loud...

I would also suggest a Cockatiel...my girl, Duff, is the quietest of all my birds, including the Budgies, lol..I've owner Budgies all of my life, both American and English, and in my experience they are louder than the Cockatiels! The Budgies aren't "loud" exactly, but they are constantly making noise...where as the Cockatiels aren't loud, and don't make noise constantly...

Any bird you get is going to make noise, and from time to time they can all be loud...but either a Cockatiel or a Budgie should be fine for an apartment...

Hi, i am still a new member in this forum, but i once have a budgie and now i have lovebirds.

I dont know about other country but in indonesia especially lovebird, their sound is quite loud and some people pet lovebird to join some contest for hearing that loud voice.

I do have a lovebird now, and he always sing loud from 9 am to 4pm, and his voice is loud , and for the level, i think my lovebird voice is almost the same as a rooster when it shout to wake people in the morning, but a little bit below rooster.

And budgie, they are a calm bird and lovely too, and they r not loud, perfect for the situation what u tell us,

Thats my opinion from my experience with this 2 birds, wish the best for ur choice

Thanks so much everyone! I hadn't even looked at Budgies or Cockatiels. I'll have some deeper looks into them as well.
I just found out there is a parrot breeder/sanctuary/rescue a few suburbs from me so I might even go by there and see how they interact and such.
Thanks!

My lovebird isnt that loud. She definately is a talker though. I will day this, when i was looking at my first potential lovebird, i was the breeders house he and ge had 3 sections in his aviary... peach faced lovebirds, green cheek conures, linnies and budgies. And out of all 4 sections the lovebirds were definitely the chatter boxes.

I don't know for sure, but I read post after post like yours (replies included) before adopting my bird (rehomed) and although there are species-specific tendencies, the real answer to your question will be BIRD/personality specific. I have an UMBRELLA COCKATOO and they are notoriously bad apartment birds, yet here we are and no complaints...I have worked with her a lot to discourage screaming (via ABA---special education teacher).

I actually made a live-stream (private) account to watch what she was doing on Youtube while at work, and she is okay...That having been said, IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I ENJOY THINKING ABOUT. If we got a noise complaint 2x, I would move, but keep that in mind with birds...you just never know.

she does scream sometimes and she can be very loud (most, if not all birds, can be a nuisance). I'm not going to lie, it is an added worry when living in an apartment...I think about it every time I leave.

Whatever you choose, make sure you have plenty of outlets for your bird when you aren't home (shredding, foraging, music etc).

My lovebird Fiona, who unfortunately became alone as her mate died of a heart disease, started to mimic the call sound of our Sun Conure. Have you also noticed that with your lovebird?
I assume it's the intensiveness of the Sun's voice that makes it particularly attractive to Fiona. I'd say that in my case, the lovebird is more vocal compared to the Sun. However Cytrynka (the Sun) spends all day with us, whereas Fiona is let out of her cage only once or twice a day - this may have an influence.

Yes! I've only had my lovebird for a month but she loves talking to my suns, too bad my suns dont like her yet. When i leave the suns on the bottom floor, leave my lovie on the 2nd floor and go to the 3rd floor to go to my room to shower or something... i hear this tiny voice trying to imitate my boys(the suns).

I clocked my suns noise level at 84 dB when they were screaming this week. The mic was right next to them. I clocked my lovebird at 75 dB. The suns do tend to scre more randomly than the lovie, lovie usually makes noiae when she is trying to communicate.

When I decided I wanted a bird in my life, I googled “quietest parrot” and came up with the parrotlet. No regrets. She is smart, funny, sassy, and doesn’t make much noise. I’ve had no complaints from the neighbors. She is a fantastic little companion.
