Anyone with a hen MP?

Conures, 2 Red bellied parrots lovebirds.
I have a rehomed hen Moustache parakeet, when I first acquired her she looked pretty awful as far as her feathers go. She's been on a good diet since I've had her and is also trying out different fruits and veggies so she has vastly improved as far as her physical appearance. I also spray her feathers down with distilled water daily and put her out in the fresh air.

Physically she has improved but I really can't do a whole lot with her, she is cage bound and is pretty much scared of everything though she is coming around a tiny bit. I talk to her for about 5 mins at a time because any longer than that will send her into a melt down.

I'm wondering if I will ever be able to tame her since I've read female MPs usually bond to one person and if they are rehomed and they usually don't transfer that bond. I'm considering constructing a large aviary for her if I'm not able to work with her.

Monica- if you're reading this the rehomed training webinar will not load for me :( does she have this video on YouTube?

Any suggestions from those who have a MP especially a female would be welcome. Thanks!

Not the webinar, but these two links may also be beneficial.

I can understand where you are coming from though, considering I have a wild caught african ringneck! She is terrified of humans!

I did start working with her, and trying to pair myself with good things (i.e. Nutriberries! She loves them!), but I didn't continue with the training as I do feel as if she would be better off in an aviary situation with others of her kind rather than a pet. I know with the right kind of training that she can become a pet and get over her fear of humans, but knowing that she's a wild caught bird of unknown age (imported May of 2013...), it just kind of hurts me to think of turning her into a pet rather than living her life out in an aviary with others of her kind (if I could find that type of situation). In a way, I guess, it kind of feels wrong to make her into a pet.

When you try to load the webinar, does it tell you anything?

Myflock, you are in Hawaii, right? There is a woman here who specializes in Asiatics and I bet she would love to help out if you want specific tips. I know she has worked with Moustache Parakeets in the past and currently has one as a pet as well (cutest bird I have EVER interacted with!) She is very knowledgeable about taming Asiactics, eve with their unique challenges. If you PM me I can give you her name and how to contact her.

Monica- Thanks for the links! The webinar link continuely says that it's loading but it never loads. It could be my device, after It updated it seems to be running like crap. I can get YouTube videos, however!

Your African Ringneck is gorgeous! I thought they stopped the import of wild caught birds long ago? Gosh! I hope mine isn't wild caught! Mine has a band on her leg though so hopefully not? My MP came to me looking really neglected, ratty feathers, dull coloring and very skinny. She has now put on some weight and her feathers look brighter. She has no clue about toys either. She stared at one of her toys for over a week before she finally started chewing on it. She still stares at that one specific toy all throughout the day. I'm sure she has never seen a single toy in her life! judging by her reaction.

I took a photo of her today while calling her name and she looked toward me for her photo, which is also an improvement, usually she avoids any kind of eye contact.

Here she is.

Yes I'm in Hawaii. I'll pm you. My MP has a leg band but I can't get close enough to her to read it, it's three letters starting with a D and some numbers, do you know who breeds them here?

And thanks! :)

Here is what she looked like when I first brought her home. Compare that to the above photo as to how she looks at the present time.

Did this little lady come from the same place as your red bellies?

And Monica, your ARN is stunning!

Yep, same place. You must have recognized her by her unusual striped beak! It doesn't appear like the person who had her before surrendering her to the shop took that great of care of her. I want to do the best that I can for her, she's a sweet thing but very scared.

Your device? Are you using a computer? If so, it might help to try using a different browser to load the webinar?

And thanks! :) As per the information I can find, the only species of parrots not on the CITES appendixes are budgies, cockatiels, peach faced lovebirds and african ringnecks. Australia has a ban on all import and exports of parrots, which leaves african ringnecks and lovebirds. I don't think PFL's are actually imported though, but as per the band information, my girl is an import.

I would highly doubt that your bird is an import. More likely, she is captive raised.

I was told Sylphie was a canary winged parakeet when she was mentioned to me. When I went to go and pick her up, I was told she was in the senegal family and not a canary winged parakeet after all. At that point, I didn't know what to expect! But when I saw her, I instantly knew what she was without having to second guess myself!

BTW, when ringnecks go through molting, they can look like crap! Worse than your girl looked when you got her!

Import bands are flat, open bands with 3 letters and 5 numbers. Here was Sylphie's...

The band is a closed silver band but it does have three letters and then numbers.

Look at Slyphie lay in the cage! Is that normal for them to do that?

Also, I'm using an iPad. After I downloaded an update it's been running really wonky.

Yikes monica, have you had that band removed? That looks scary to me. Also, some import bands are rolled steel rather than flat. The band you show can also be ordered easily and applied, and you can order them with whatever you want on them as long as it fits. No credentials are required to order bands other than a valid address to ship to and a method of payment :(

Myflock, I have a strong suspicion that I know where your bird came from, if you can read those numbers.

Yes, Ringnecks look like they have been through a meat processor while they molt! How such a beautiful bird can look so raggedy is beyond me! Lol!

Monica, where are you located?

Then she is, no doubt, a breeder bird! :) Import bands are *always* open bands!

Breeder bands aren't always closed bands, but most of the time, they are!

As for her "laying" in the cage? Oddly, she only ever did that in *THAT* cage... which is the cage I picked her up in, but I *DID NOT* keep her in! Once I got her home, I promptly moved her into a larger, spare cage I had.

I don't know much about iPads..... I would half wonder if it's possible to do a downgrade? To make it work right? Or see if there are any further updates to make it work right?

Yes, the band has been removed. As per my information (a breeder in business for 40+ years?), it is indeed an import band, and he even got in contact with the importer to get the information of when she was imported. I was told that is how the new import bands are now-a-days.

Monica, where are you located?

Northern Nevada :)

ok, that is interesting :) the import bands I have seen have always been the rolled, I was wondering if maybe you were in Australia or something like that which might make the bands different than what I am used to seeing :)

Here in Hawaii there is a VERY low standard of bird care. It could be that your MP was used as a breeder, but if she came from where I think she did, it is more likely that the breeder simply never bothered to tame her.

Silversage, so as to not derail this thread, I'll send you the info about import bands that I was told... :)

Ok, I just had a glimpse at the band and it looks like only two letters DG as far as numbers that I can read I see the start of 9881 and then I'm not able to read it due to her fear but the end numbers are 127. Not sure that helps in anyway.

Monica- I don't mind if you derail my thread, I'm pretty laid back and don't care lol ;)

I tried downgrading it and remove this update and from what I've read I'm not able to. It's running so horribly now I'm ready to toss it in the rubbish can!

It's most likely a breeder aviary bird, never tamed or Interacted with until now ( how did she end up at KP?) so maybe there's still some hope I can bond with her since no one has before? She's actually been better today and isn't running to the corner of her cage when I approach it and even ate her food when I was in there and didn't try to hide in a corner. I Tried to offer her an almond but she just stared at it and went to flee. She does like almonds so I'm not going to put that in her treat cup anymore and try offering it by hand thru the cage bars.

I know someone who bought an aviary bred (aka parent raised) indian ringneck and was able to bond with her! :) So I have no doubt it's possible to work with your MP!

I don't suppose you have any other device that you can try loading the webinar on????

As far as the leg band information.... here's the gist of it all. :)

Steve African Ringnecks are not uncommon. They are still imported and sell for as little as $50.

Frank It's probably a quarantine band.

Only two importers in the U.S. bringing them in and both are in southern California.

The import bands have changed from round steel to flat and from 3 letters and 3 numbers to the current 3 letters and 5 numbers. I am 99% sure that your bird was an import from Senegal.

Sorry Dar, for the sarcasm! Steve and I have also been in the biz for 40 years. Since the imports of the large psittacines ceased several years ago, there was no longer a need for the heavy duty steel bands. Now they use flat open bands that are applied using modified pliers. If you've ever assembled cages using j-clips, you'd know that they don't always go on perfectly. Same with these bands. And, after a thousand Ringnecks, it probably gets progressively worse.

From the letters Monica posted and a couple of phone calls, I found who imported the birds and the facility used, but not the date imported.

***Private messages from Frank***

Hi Monica,

The first two letters are assigned to the importer and the third letter is assigned to a specific facility.

I'm friends with the owner, and will ask him about an import date when he gets back in town. All of the ARN come from Senegal and are still being imported a couple thousand per year.

Your bird came out of quarantine May 2013.

----- I did leave out some information, since I was asked to keep it confidential. :)
