Anyone else save feathers? *pics*

I don't really save that many but the ones I do have are pretty nice, the wife holds onto them for sentimental reasons. And with the GW's I have some huge ones.

Once you have a large collection, what are you going to do with them?

I have given them away to people who use them for fishing flies and earrings.

I occasionally get a younger kid that comes over and wants a feather and give it to them, I give them away but always keep the biggest ones for me, plus I have feathers from two birds that are willed to me so I have a part of them... Which would be the hyacinth and a emerald macaw.

That's what I do with mine so I really don't keep all of mine, I usually end up giving them away.

I have always kept my parrots' feathers. After my boys had died I made scrapbooks of their lives with me. I have used their feathers in the scrapbooks so I will always have that memory. Mihijo, my noble macaw had lived the longest so I had quite the collection of feathers. I had a vender at our Renaissance fair make a fan out of his tail feathers and I hand that on one of my parrot paintings in my bedroom.

In prepairation for Valentino's LONG tail feathers (24 inches long and his flight feathers are very long also) I bought a donated silverware box from a thrift shop and redone it into "Valentino's Treasures". The box is large enough for his long feathers and it will take many many years to fill it up. I left the original felt inside but disassembled the wood thing in there that was to keep the silverware in place. So far during Valentino's first moult I only have a few little body feathers in there. Soon when he starts dropping primary and tail feathers they will be put in the box.

What i have is this one Royal Doulton china cup and saucer that is the "October" birthday cup, sitting in my hutch in my dining room. If anyone ever opened the cabinet and took that out, they would be like 'what the heck?'

I have a feather from each bird i have lost, back to my first bird, Percy. After he died, I had wished i had some of his feathers to remember him. Then i happened to find a feather of his that i had missed when cleaning and put it in the cup.

So, that has become the tradition. One little feather from each bird, in memory of my lost friends.

I've always save feathers... I have a vase of peacock feathers at my parents house from when we had peacocks, that are probably 20 years old... they are kinda starting to fall apart.

Now I put a lot of feathers in a box, I do make jewelry sometimes, so I'll have to try making something with feathers

The first picture, that's a looooottt of feathers! I only saved 4 or 5 from Boomer and the budgies' first molt, also for sentimental reasons like most of you. I'm afraid to keep any more than that because I wouldn't know when to stop, plus i dont know if mites and insects might want to live in it.

yay! Rosie just started going back into molt yesterday, she dropped 5 primary coverts, two secondary feathers, and a small scapular feather. Some of her feathers are over two years old! I hope she looses them finally this molt! lol

LOL, I'm not just a parrot person but also a bird person ;) I assumed most parrot people knew the names of the different feathers haha. I have been told I am a scientific person though.

That's easy, the skin around the eye! LOL that was way to easy since Rosie has one XD

Haha well that's enough for the quizzing tonight, maybe more tomorrow... Anything with ophthalmic is easy as it pertains to the eye. I know a lot of bird anatomy and now with the vet tech classes I am taking a bunch of dog and cat as well:).

It's good to know the anatomy so when you are doing behavior work or at least in my case I can give better landmark references:)

Oh yeah, I forgot your a vet tech lol. One of my close friends just graduated with her degree in ornithology, we have lots of bird talks haha. I say rousing instead of ruffling because of her(she's also a falconer).

Not a certified tech yet so I can't call myself that, one day hopefully an avian bet and behavioral specialist if I keep up my work:). Lol one day when im in my thirties!

That is great I wish owning falcons and stuff around here was allowed but we have stupid laws against it, I couldn't even hold a friends falcon and raven from me York when I meet them at a wild life exhibit that we goto every year with the rescue. She said I'd have to come it new York just because the laws-.-, I wanted to hold the falcon sooo bad, she said if I wanted to I could do it on my bare arm, must only in new York sadly.

aw that sucks :( I'm not sure if it's legal to hold a falcon here or not, but my friend(my ornithology friends dad) lets me. When he hooded his falcons more I got to hold her peregrine and pet her, since then he's done a lot of research and has a lot of falconry friends who have as well. They have found that generally birds who aren't hooded fly so much better so he rarely does so anymore except for beak trimmings.

I love Harris hawks, they have a hierarchy system so you can pet them on the back as a sign of dominance. They prefer a steady pressure because in the wild they will stack on top of one another with the most dominant on top.

When I can afford it I'm going to start my falconry apprenticeship, after I've graduated and I'm making a good amount of money.

after I become a general(after 2 year apprenticeship) I plan to buy a Harris. They are very easy to train and a lot of fun. Only down side is they greatly dislike dogs and are well known for attacking them.

well this friend would have but we were at a public event with tons of people so she couldnt risk it just for me.

that sounds great id love to get into more type of animal training i believe im going to broaden into dogs within the next year or so i want to buy a australian shepard puppy and work agility and so on sooo it could be fun;).

The contrasting colors are beautiful. Grey and pinkish red look great together. I think I am going to find a way to incoporate those colors into my living room.
