3 year old male Eclectus
Hi all,

I am lucky enough to be owned by a 3 or 4 year old male eclectus we've had for about 6 months. We've laboriously gotten him onto a 90% fresh food diet of grains & pulses, fruits, sprouted seed and veggies (veggies are always a struggle with this boy who was raised on seeds). He spends a couple hours each day in a pretty big outdoor aviary when the weather is nice, with our other bird, a blue head pionus female, caged separately but within eyesight. Both birds have their inside cages in the bird room across from each other; when they're out during most of the day, our ekkie rules over two large perches in the living room and our pi is relegated to a perch in another room off the kitchen to avoid our eclectus "hunting" her down.

Every so often I contemplate bringing home a second ekkie. I'd definitely only do it if I could assess beforehand that my boy and the newcomer would flock together well. We have our pionus who was our first bird child, and although the two birds tolerate each other, our ekkie chases her off of her perches if she's lose in the room with him. On the other hand, he screams when he is in his cage if she isn't in her cage across from him. Fussy boy! He seems desperately unhappy if he is ever in a room without either a person or our other bird. I wonder if he would get along better with a female ekkie or another male than the much smaller, different-species pionus. Since our eclectus does not tolerate ever being alone, I think overall I'd find bird-keeping a little easier if he had a companion who could be housed in the aviary (which is quite large, 10ft by 15ft) and loose in a room with him without him chasing or attacking them. Obviously separate cages for their inside cages.

Anybody successfully (or unsuccessfully) bring home a second eclectus? Male or female? And how did the intro go?
