Another - Why Open Leg Bands Can Be Dangerous

Just for anyone who was wondering about the micro chip..

When I got my macaw he had already gotten a chip put it, he got it via the breeder he was from (I'm his second owner). I got all the paperwork on the chip when I had gotten him. Its an Avid Friend chip. He was 3 months and 5 days old when he got the microchip. From my understanding and research this particular brand doesn't have to be replaced, and it is put it via a hypodermic needle. I haven't had any problems with Aznus microchip, it doesn't seem to cause him any pain, and so far he has been good with it. With his microchip I had to pay $19.95 for them to be able to track him if he were to get lost. As for the initial cost I'm not sure of that.
On the paperwork, it does say "Isoflurane anesthesia was used for all procedures preformed. Induction was via a face mask cone of 5% which adequate oxygen flow. Once relaxed the cone was reduced to 2-3% for the duration. Anesthesia time: less then 8 minutes." So he was partially put under for the insertion of the microchip.

Oliver has a closed band which I seriously considered taking off, but I do worry about the chip as well. It's my understanding he would need to go under for the removal and replacement. I don't like to go under if I can avoid it so I try and avoid it with my pets as well. I think if I remove his I'd just leave it be--no chip. Big decisions are tough for me when it comes to my animals who can't voice what they'd prefer...

I agree, I would NEVER put any animal under unless it was absolutely necessary
I would just skip the chip (which is my plan with our forthcoming GW)

That is really good info, Thanks !!

YES! Open leg bands are extremely dangerous!! Kirby had a leg band that was not only open, but a bit loose around his leg. One day I found him hanging by his foot high in the cage screeching. I have never, ever heard him screech before or after that moment. He is not a screeching bird. I grabbed him and looked at him and (just like whats happening now, if you look at my topic) he was limping and unable to use his banded foot. We had to go get it cut off by a vet. Never have these bands on your bird, Kirby would have been far worse if I hadn't managed to walk in at that time!

The band is on the left foot, and this bird is left footed. She is able to eat holding food in her left foot with no problems.... no knock on wood, no issues yet.

Still waiting for the vet office to open.... keep checking their website and Facebook for updates.... says it'll open "Early May"... well, 'early May' is just about over....

happycat, it's a good thing you were there to help Kirby out when he needed it!
