Hello everyone.
This is my first post, I hope it is a worthy first...

I have a Green Cheek, and 2 parakeets. They are all buddies and usually share everything. The only thing they don't share is me. The parakeets hate me, but my Lenny loves me. I was actually at the pet store buying another parakeet in hopes that THAT one will not be corrupt, and will actually hang out with me. As the guy took the bird and was ringing him up, I was getting some millet sprays for the birds, and as I walked past the bird cages, this little beautiful green bird jumped off his perch, which caught my attention, and as I looked at him, he came toward me. I put my hand up, and he tried to get to me, but the bars wouldn't let him. I wasn't intending to spend $400 for a bird that day, but the way I seen it, he picked me, and I couldn't leave there without him. I didn't mind annoying the clerk by cancelling my purchase (which was now complete) and starting a new one, even though the store closed 15 minutes ago. :D

Lenny and I have become great friends. Sometimes during the summer instead of coming home on a Friday night after work, I'd head north to the mountains, and camp for the night and spend the next day in the river. I LOVE THAT! Anyways, every time I'd come home after being gone 1 whole day, he would greet me as usual, waiting on the cage door for me to open it and him jump to my shoulder, but those days he would always greet me with pretty hard bites on my fingers, probably twice as hard as his usual greeting bites, and for 15 or 20 seconds longer than normal as well. I kind of took that as him being pissed off at me for leaving him hanging for a day, or for me not being home when he was expecting me, like a mother or spouse would do.

I had to be gone for 6 weeks and just got back today. I know my roommates were taking good care of my birds. But today when I walked in, I was so excited to see him, I missed him a lot, when he saw me and heard my voice, he acted crazy and went to the back of the cage. when I opened it, he wouldn't let me near him, and when I finally got him, he was horrible, he was just biting the crap out of me, and wouldn't stop. He even made one finger bleed quite a bit. I have never seen him show aggression toward anyone, in fact I am the only person he has ever bitten to my knowledge. He flew to my roommate for a couple minutes but kept looking at me doing the head bobbing thing he usually does when he wants to fly somewhere, but he is still growing back his wings which were clipped when i bought him, so he is timid with flight. But I knew he wanted to fly back to me, so i went toward him, and he jumped to me, and was showing me love again like he always had before. At first I thought he forgot me, but he is always nice to strangers, he was definitely not nice to me. After 5 minutes he is loving on me extra more than normal...

Was he actually angry at me for leaving him?
Like, did he realize how long I was gone?
Was he mad because he assumed I was gone for good, and somehow came back to life or something?

Oh yeah that is one pissed off polly there, best thing for you to do is greet him and let your roommates carry on with him as nothing is wrong in a few days he will be back to his old self.

Budgies at pet stores are not "corrupt" - they simply have not been raised by humans, so they do not understand that it can be fun to hang with a human. As far as they know, some big scary predator has just separated them from their flock (the only place they know as 'safe' - safety in numbers and familiarity), has then stuck them in a new environment with different sounds and looks.

If a bird hates you, they will go out of their way to attack you. If a bird is afraid of you, they will avoid you at all costs, and bite as a 'last resort'.

As far as going away, some birds are happy when their owners get back and others are pissed. If he's not happy, then you need to give him time to settle down before trying to handle him. Don't immediately pick him up for him to bite you, but leave him be, talk to him, give him treats and allow him to go to you.

He was happy you were back while at the same time wanted to show that that he was pissed at you for having left him for so long. Payback is a you know what!
