So through an unfortunate circumstance, I took in a couple pairs of parrotlets. They are breeders, so they are not hand tame, and I plan on continuing to breed them. I've bred budgies in the past, and I've always loves parrotlets, although I've never gotten the chance to own any.
There was a lady who bred birds about 5 hours south of here who fell extremely ill and had major complications in regards to respiratory issues. Before they would release her from the hospital, her doctors said all of her birds had to be out of the house. So the rescue I work with made an overnight trip down and ended up picking up close to 50 or 60 birds, some sitting on eggs and babies. It was far from an ideal situation in all aspects. Most of the eggs were all lost during the transport, although a few of the babies survived, some only a day or two old. Once they were back up here, they were handfed around the clock and did survive. Since my fondness of parrotlets was known, I was asked if I would be interested in the two breeding pairs, so I said yes.
I've had the pairs for about a month now. I have one pair that is currently sitting on six eggs, and I hope that is all she is going to lay. Not that I wouldn't like more babies, but I think it starts to be too much on mom when they lay giant clutches. So here is a picture of mom, I named her Allison, and she is sitting tightly on her eggs like a good mommy should.
And the daddy to that clutch is Parker.
The second pair are comical. I think they are so amusing to watch. The male is a yellow, and his name is Sunny. He seems to be a pretty laid back bird and just goes along with whatever his mate decides. Not the best picture, but he is in the bottom left on the food dish.
Finally is Sunny's mate, Psycho. And yes, I am the one that named them, and no, you can't judge me. If you ever met this little bird, I'm pretty sure you all would agree. She also happens to be my favorite of the four. She reminds me of a ratty little mutt dog, honestly. Her nares are much larger than normal, and she is a little scrapper. When I took her to the vet, her said the nares are nothing to be concerned about, it is an after affect of a respiratory infection she had when she was probably pretty young and they'll always be that way. She is very protective of her nest, you go anywhere near it, and she will fly across the cage and try to eat you. And although she tends to look either more blue or more green depending on the picture, she is actually a turquoise.
