from my experience of calling dozens of english people 'poms', they actually think of it as a light-hearted term.

there is a real bond between the english and australians that goes way back, and pom is definitely not a nasty expression, and like i said, i've never seen it taken in the wrong way.

wow, i've never had a pom tell me they prefer to be called british, still there is a first for everything.

technically all the countries i mentioned are british, however each of these are very patriotic when it comes to their own country.

one thing that annoys me is when i hear an american sports commentator call an english[or any of the others] sports team a british one. if that were the case, it would usually have a mix from all of the countries in it.

also, don't think that the republic of ireland[eire] is part of the uk either, that country cut links with britain in 1949. only northern ireland is part of the uk.

I'm a Brit and I call myself a Brit but I'm English first and British second.

One thing I noticed during the world cup was the Americans discussing playing the British, I had to put them right, they weren't playing the British, they were playing England, a much smaller area probably similar in size to Texas that put it into perspective for them lol. Incidently whilst discussing this with an American from the south I discovered the southerners didn't like being refered to as "yanks" to them yanks are from the north. It's a fine line between a joke and an insult no matter where you are from I guess.
