hmmm I have a question. Why is my baby Amazon who has been with me for almost a month and was taken off the spray 2 months ago. I have a small problem, her weight varies a lot, sometimes less, sometimes more, I will send you a table of the weights below. She doesn't want to eat enough, she doesn't want to eat seeds, she eats pellets a little that are submerged, she happily accepts crushed pellets that I put in warm water and give to her from a spoon, she happily wants to eat cauliflower, broccoli, peas, carrots, pumpkin, peppers and literally all fruits and vegetables and she eats all of them but she doesn't really want these seeds, sunflower seeds and pellets, or rather she doesn't eat enough. What should I do, then when she doesn't eat enough, she pees a little. Hmmm I don't know what to do

Coming off formula they drop a little weight. Keep offering pellets however she will take them. ANd theres nothing wrong with veggies and some fruits! IF she drops more hen 5-8% and doesn't get it back in a day or 2, then its time to worry. A steady decline is the real concern.

Once their rapid baby growth is over baby parrots do lose a bit of weight. Their crop shrinks to make them more streamlined for flight, so they eat a lot less in each sitting.

I've seen that it takes longer for a hand raised parrot to wean than a parent raised one, at least with budgies. The parent birds teach their kids how and what to eat by example. Eating (or pretending to eat) what you want the baby to eat helps. I assume you don't want to eat seeds. I'm not sure why you want your baby to eat seeds. She will likely eat seeds eventually whether you want her to or not.

I would concentrate on the pellets, veggies and some cooked brown rice. It would be great if you committed to feeding your bird chop, a cooked mixture of chopped veggies, rice, beans and pasta, every morning, supplemented with pellets, and fruit and veggie treats.

Don't keep cooked food out at room temp much longer than four hours so it doesn't go bad. Bird Street Bistro makes great chop base mixes to which you add your own fresh veggies.

I'm trying to wean a 9 week old hand raised budgie to feed herself without me having to feed her with a spoon. I mix her formula (Higgins InTune a rice based formula) with cooked rice, making a thick lumpy paste and put a teaspoon full in a small plastic cup (2"x1" deep) warm it slightly, and set it on its side on a flat surface and she eats it out of the cup without having to hold her or the cup.
If I were you, I would mix tiny pellets (or crushed ones) and finely chopped vegetables with her formula and let her feed herself out of a cup like this. When shes done, throw away the leftover and make fresh for the next meal. Don't rush the weaning process- it will only frustrate her.

Our story...
Here's what I've used for 40 years with the same bird.
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.
Another couple of ideas...
My ol' man is an athlete and health nut. He actually EATS all the good stuff, so it's always around. I find that tossing various stuff into the food bowls at random is good... the variations and differences seem to stimulate curiosity and attention.
The other idea... if you can stand it (lol) EAT the stuff in front of the birds, yes. That encourages them. I have also found that if my ol' man eats stuff in front of the bird, the bird WANTS it for himself. Kinda a rivalry thing!
Since you're a new parront, I'll just drop a note about avoiding teflon pans, which can be lethal to birds if overheated.
I'm glad you're here. Lots to learn and share and enjoy!

What species of Amazon do you have? There are large ones and medium and smaller ones. Salty is a small one. Once they approach the nominate weight range for the species, it should level off. And some within that range are at each end, and then some. Salty's adult range is like 280-325gr but he is like 242 or so. Up 2 gr, down 2 gr, but around that. For larger 'zons, yours got some growing to do.

The problem is that I feel like she doesn't have time to eat because she's hyperactive, and I agree and I think she's growing right now and her weight is fluctuating as you can see in the chart. I don't think it's a cause for concern. She likes and wants pellets that are moist and of course vegetables that she loves a lot. I can give her sunflower seeds, no problem at all because she's already used to pellets. This is my first experience with a bird that doesn't really want to eat much because my previous birds, a GCC and an Amazon, weren't picky and ate everything that was put in front of them and they knew how to eat it right away.

Koju vrstu Amazonije imate?
