Hello, I am the proud parent of a 4 month old, male Lilac Crowned Amazon named Bacci. During a recent visit to his breeder, I was introduced to a lovely six month old, female Lesser Sulpher Crested Cockatoo, who I fell in love with. The breeder, who is very well known and highly reputable assured me that this bird would make a suitable addition to our family, that the birds would be compatible, and that I could possibly keep them in the same (large) cage.

I truly relish the idea of adding her to our home, although I have reservations, because I would never forgive myself if her presence had a negative effect on Bacci, or diminished his happiness in any way.

I am writing to request your opinions as well as to hear of any experience any of you have had with regard to this matter.
Thank you in advance.:green1:

I would worry about the dust from the 'too making the 'zon have lung issues. I would say different cages with a air filter. They can always play on the playstand together during the day.
Its like having two human kids in one room, yes it works, but there is less drama if each have their own.

Please have a look around in the cockatoo section. Cockatoos are TRULY not for everyone. Since I am not experienced with cockatoos, I will let others chime in on this.

I am also moving this into the cockatoo section, in hopes you'll get a whole lot more feedback. :)

As for putting them in the same cage together: I would NEVER even attempt that. Cockatoos can do quite some damage with those can openers attached to their faces. ;)

I would question this breeders parrot education if they are suggesting you house a amazon and cockatoo together.

A big no for that lol, and as said above the dust from the cockatoo could give your amazon lung problems, so a air filter would be important and seperate cages a must.

Please check out All About Cockatoos - MyToos.com if your thinking about adopting a cockatoo

There's a picture in Crimson's Bad Beaks document (post in the Health section) that shows what can happen when a cockatoo decides to take a chunk out of another bird - you'll need a strong stomach but a look at that would probably settle any question of caging them together. They can still appreciate each other's company in neighbouring cages.

Love the name Bacci by the way!

My Toos [except the Rb2] are very aggressive towards other birds. Its not saying that if its right for you and you really want a Too [then do it]. But don't take any chances[have them out separately . My one Too will fly to attack my zon [poor guy he wants no part of it] But I will tell you my zon has a huge crush on my Macaw . Ive met 2 other people telling me their zons liked the Macaw. But you never know . You can have different species they just may not be friends.

My lesser sulphur crested girl is actually good with other birds! She got along with my ekkies pretty good as they're roughly the same size with the smaller amazon and such. But the dust would be the main issue! When she was with the ekkies, it would the ekkies that started picking at her, not the other way around. Dixie is a very sweet and gentle girl!

It comes down to the individual birds, but I agree it would definitely not be a good idea to house them in the same cage. Our cockatoo Corey in attached pic hates cockatiels and our lorikeet, but loves Alex our eccy.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I did not think about the dust affecting Bacci, and I would just die if he were hurt by another bird (especially if it were my fault) I will most definitely take more time before making a decision. :green1:

Hello
Look how Amazon live with Cockatoo very well. This is friends photo from Russia

Shushu, that is so beautiful, how your babies get along!!!

I dont have babies cockatoo. I asked before for my friends baby cockatoo. he dont have much experience with that and in his country, he can not find a frined with pair cockatoo with babies.

different cages should be ok. i hate seeing birds all crammed into the one cage (no matter how big it is). i have two sulphur cresteds as well as an amazon. the amazon "fights" with the male sulphur crested but backs away from the female. they are not housed in the same cage, the amazon is in an aviary whilst the cockatoos are inside due to their excessive screaming. they do spend some time in the aviary when i'm out with them which is where i watch their interactions. when there is space to get away, usually someone will back down. if they were caged together i have no doubts you'll end up with an injury

but i do let them all fly around the kitchen/house and there's never any incidents. with enough space i think most parrots will coexist to an extent
