Am I the only one...?

I might be totally uninformed about this topic, but I've never come across any unwanted parrots that need rehoming/rescuing in Sydney (Australia).

recently spoke at length with a woman who went thru a horrible divorce and for some reason her malicious ex got the bird them proceeded to use it to get back at her for aboout 7 years til she got him back, more than a little worse for the wear, but now nursing him back to health.

The whole time I was reading this post from her I was horrified to think there was another human being out there that would stoop to harming and abusing an animal so he could get back at his ex.

Then today in the UK Telegraph I read the story of an ex-boyfriend who killed his former girlfriends hamster right in front of her and fed it to his dog. Spurned man hurled girlfriend's hamster against wall before feeding it to dog - Telegraph

A righteous [man] regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked [are] cruel.

Oh god... I just read that article. That's horrible.

Australia is amending it's Domestic Violence Act to include threats to animals in relationships now. Originally it was flagged under animal cruelty, but now offenders get hit with both laws.

It's very tragic and depressing that such people like that exist in the world. I was tearing up when I read the story of Blue on this site: Sponsor an Amazon - Welcome to Parrotcare and Rehabilitation Those.. .. if you can even call them "people" are just.. urgh. Makes me so angry and upset.

It is pretty sad. Not just birds, but all animals. People just dont know what they are getting themselves into, and when they find out, the "decide" all of a sudden that they dont want any part of it. Most people dont even care who or where they go to. Our guinea pigs were rescues due to the original owner not being able to have pets where she was moving (in college). She was so sad to leave her boys and one of the first things she asked me was if I had any snakes because so many people had replied saying they wanted her as snake food. I assured her that I didnt and invited her over to see what kind of place I lived in and she was happy. We had both of them for about 4 months and she moved to another place and she wanted them back and we gladly gave them. That kind of stuff rarely happens. Alot of my friends said "its just a guinea pig, why the fuss?" and I usually just dont say anything. It dosent and shouldnt matter what it is.

I was a little hesitant to get our puppy that my lady wanted SOOOOO bad because it was a purebred puppy when there are so many pets in need of good homes. She did all her research though and wanted a Bichon Frise. The place we got her from was a private breeder but unfortunately it was one of those puppy mills.....just cranking out puppies for profit. I felt bad enough for the poor girl and we took her home ($700 later lol).

My Scarlet (my SI Eclectus) is 18 years old and I just got her 4 days ago. I would much rather take a companion that is in need than try to get a baby just because there are so many in need of some lovins. I understand why people get babies and such, I just think that if I can make a difference, I will do what I can. My chance will Scarlet just fell into place and Im happy as all hell about it. I even got her for free because her previous owner wanted to make sure she went to a good home with someone who actually knew what they were getting themselves into and not someone who just wanted another novelty pet.

Sorry for the long post. ;)

There was a man here who took his 5 month old parrot out of his cage and slammed it to the floor, killing it. He was mad at his GF.:02::02::02:

I'd like to take that guy deep sea fishing, take him mind you, not bring him back.

how can people be so cruel to animals, at that point, who's really the "animal" in the situation D:<

I listen to classical music when I am taking my birds on training tosses. No opera though. Now if I could get them to play the music since the race days, I might do a little better in the standings.

You most certainly are NOT the only one who feels this way. I was fortunate enough to get my zon from a wonderful person on craigslist. It was definitely a rare occasion though. I have so much empathy towards animals because we have made them dependent on humans. When their human has failed to care for them and they find means on their own to care for themselves they are then considered pests and the majority are euthanized. I even feel sorry when I see an animal I don't care for (reptiles make my skin crawl) being neglected or abused. I have had several snakes brought to my home to be cared for until they found their permanent home. I got my beloved Jacob,a male java macaque, because the husband put him outside in a cage. Jacob loved his original mommy but she got cancer and the husband was jealous of the bond between her and Jacob. He was accustomed to being inside the house and loved and cared for like her child. Jacob was with his mommy when she died in her bed. When the husband tried to remove him from her, he attacked him. Rather than understanding his behavior, he was put outside and rarely cared for. This would be the equivalent to putting a child in a cage outside. This proved too traumatic for Jacob so he started self mutilization. I got the phone call on him and picked him up from the vets office after most of his tail had to be removed. He physically cried for the first week I had him and gave him a stuffed animal for comfort while I had to medicate and rewrap his tail. Anyway I could talk to hours on my Jacob but abuse and neglect is too profound and common...even in exotics that people have paid thousands of dollars for. If you have to resell a pet never think that the rehoming price will reflect their safety.

Lori honey do you mean your Jacob? Because if you mean mine I can get in the car and drive him to you lol. My Jacob loves car rides and he gets upset when people at the drive through laugh at him in his car seat.
