Mickey - Female U2 age unknown. DNA test came back...he is a SHE,

Tinker 12 yr old female GCC

Chiquita 16 yr old Female U2 and Junior 16 yr old Male Grey
I found this girl on craigslist....

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pet/2901090027.html

and she just looks so depressed....I've emailed the lady, and will potentially meet Logan Friday.

AM I crazy?

This is the email I received when I asked for more info

No I have not taken her to a vet .Do not see any need .I just wonder if she near other birds her size ,would she finally come around and be socialable.
I have new grandchildren in the family and I do shut the door to her room when they are over. I am concerned she would most likely bite them if she could get to them.
I have worked with her .I just want her happy .Some days she is great I walk in ,say lets dance (head bopping) and she does to . I try offering things she likes.
the only time she will actually step up on my arm ,is if she is out of her cage and is wondering and cannot get back.then she jumps right up. Other wise she doest bother.
She is out in her room 80% of the time.
But the resue lady who I got Logan from ,will come over and say give me kiss Logan and she does .So surprising.
Thats just it ,is it me and can Logan benefit by a more experienced parrot owner.
I only want the best for my girl.

So I guess what I'm asking is.... what are the chances that with interaction and love, good food, and vet care.... I may at least have a semi sociable bird? Or at least one who won't attack??? I only hesitate because I'm not sure at 27, if she will "relearn" trust. I will see how she reacts to me, and make a decision. She looks like she needs at the very least a good bath and a vet visit.

This poor bird! The reason I decided to get Clifford is because the only bird expierence I had was with parakeets, after researching, Conures seemed to be something I could care for. If parakeets had not been in my life forever I would have never thought about buying a bird. A macaw was the LAST thing I ever would have thought about, there is no way I would have known how to care for a bird that size. Don't people know that the care you provide to the animal determines the health and happiness and span of that animals life? It hurts me to see that he is suffering because of neglect. weather intentional or not, its still neglect.
I am sorry to post so negativley. This just makes me sad.
I hope he finds a good home and becomes the healthy happy bird he deserves to be!
And your wonderful for wanting to help him MickeysMom!!!

Thank you for the kind words. And I have to agree with you, it's just sad.

I originally was looking for either a Macaw or a Cockatoo when I found Mickey. Now I find this poor girl, and I feel like I could provide a good home for her. I'm leaning toward rescuing her, and even if she's never a "lovebug" I will be ok with that. As long as she is happy and healthy I would be happy.

She probably would be a love bug once she is happy and healthy. I know I would be extremely happy if someone saved me.

I hope it works out for the best for both of you. If it's meant to be, it will be :) But I think that bird needs a vet asap. Just to make sure she isn't ill. and a bath, and a cookie, and some kisses too.

Well, Pete was about 28.5 years old when I adopted him. He actually made friends with me pretty quickly. I thought it would take much longer, leaving a home he had all his life.

Why not go meet her and see what you think? Pete wasn't immediately thrilled with me, but I took him anyway. It was only a few days before he started to adore me.

That's what I'm leaning towards:D

She hasn't responded since I asked to meet Logan, so I don't know what is going on at this point. But if I have the chance I'm going to go and get her.....

Any ideas on what type of Macaw she is? I can't really tell the coloring from the pictures...but she looks like she has turquois wings....It really doesn't matter to me, but I'm curious.

I was also wondering what kind of macaw she is. I think a hybrid of some kind, maybe a Catalina.

I figured with Pete, he was sweet with his owner so I knew he wasn't a problem bird, and he definitely needed some help. His cage was much too small and he had malnutrition problems. So I decided I would take him, and if a year went by and he wasn't happy with me, I would try to find him an owner he did like. I was told he didn't like women, but since I've had him, I've seen the opposite. But, as a woman I was concerned that he might not ever like me, and that I might need to find him a man if things weren't going well after a year to adjust.

Well, he likes women, he is thrilled to have a bigger cage, he now plays with toys and he's on pellets, fruit and veggies and other healthy foods. He is a lot more active now, and quite the talker. He used to sit like a lump most of the time, but now he is often climbing, playing and talking.

Well I just heard back, and she didn't give me a day or time to meet Logan, but did say that her reaction to meeting me would make or break the deal. She really seems to want the best for Logan, which is a good thing. Fingers crossed :D She is supposed to email me when she gets home from work, and give me the cage dimensions and a time.

Catalina looks close since she looks like she has the orange coloring on the belly....

Hi. You are taking on a very long and dificult project. I think I would try it if I wanted to very much. The photo I see has nothing to judge size. It probably is a mutation with or just a poor photo of Ara severus. I have never seen one but they must de common in the North american pet trade. D.D.

My guess would be...some blue and gold macaw mixed with...hmm? You obviously have a big heart, I think most bird people do.

I came real close to becoming a new caretaker of a B&G macaw, not too long ago, he's 26 yrs. old. My dad's health issues have postponed these plans, for now. At the time, I was advised by some, not to it. One of these people, being my avian vet, and she was concerned about cockatoo dander. B&G's are sensitive to cockatoo dust because they originated on different continents, the macaw will have issues. Air purifiers are a must!

I'm still in contact with the folks that have this macaw and they told me that Max wasn't going anywhere till I was ready to take him! Yay!!

Oh wow , your a great person for wanting to adopt this poor soul.
Let us know how it goes !

I want to very much.... When I adopt an animal it is for life, theirs or mine.... 1 of our St Bernards we adopted last year at 7 yrs old. The lady was losing her home, and the SPCA had told her because of the dogs age she would be put down without trying to adopt her out. Well I couldn't allow that to happen! She is almost 8 now, and still surprisingly spry for an old lady, and I will give her the best life possible for whatever time she has left. As I will do for this Macaw if it works out and I adopt her :D

Yay for you and MAX!!!!

And yes we are aware of the issues with dander and Macaws, we run an air purifier int the living room, and will add another for the dining room (which is where her cage will be once she's given a clean bill of health from the vet) the rooms are open to one another, so the birds will be able to interact. But it will give them a little space, in case they aren't particularly fond of one another;)

Thanks

I will update as soon as I know anything....the waiting is killing me!

I'll add my 2 cents by saying thanks for wanting to give this poor angel a home. Since you know what you're getting into, I say "Go for it!" Good luck.

Will say a prayer that things work out, the poor thing is just so sad-looking, all puffed out and needs someone who will understand her - or at least try! You are not crazy, you are a good, compassionate person.

Keep us updated! Looking forward to hearing more.

Also I think she looks a bit like a catalina from what I can see :)

This bird has most likely been mistreated at some point. Now if your in for a challenge then I would go for it. But you must realize that no matter how nice you may be to the bird, she may never be a cuddle bug. But with a lot of persistance you can probably have at the very least a nice controlled bird that doesn't want to rip your arm off every time you walk by her cage.

This person should never have adopted this type of bird and especially a rescued bird with no experience. People that do this is what causes birds to be bounced around from pillar to post. If someone doesn't know what they are doing, shouldn't adopt rescued birds assuming that they will be able to tame them, resocialize them and have a sweet lovable bird on their hands. If anything, their good intentions cause more harm than good.

Macaws need a strong hand when being dealt with rather than someone who is scared of them and shows it.

I think it happens because they get the bird free or cheap, and that is their goal, rather than realizing they don't have the experience.
