I'm bringing home my two Eckies on Sunday, and as I have said they are in BAD SHAPE. I'm wondering about giving Aloe Detox by Lilly of the Desert in their water. It is supposed to be non toxic and safe, but I know Eckies are in a league of their own. Also it is usually used for things like Fatty Liver, and I'm not sure if that would be a concern since the male has been on pellets his entire life 15 years) and the female for at least 10 years. Basically these birds need a total health overhaul, and I am wondering specifically for cage bound Eclectus who have been strictly on pellets, pluck, and have not seen the sun unfiltered for at least a decade, would Aloe Detox be safe and helpful?

Also, does anyone know of any natural safe food that could promote calmness and help relieve stress in them? I am about to separate them for the first time in 10 years, along with all other changes. Thanks :)

I learned about it from Carolyn Swicegood, and she used it to save an eckie hen that she was told was going to die... And a few months later had normal liver values. Check. Out the details posted on the land of vos site.

Didn't labell recently say something about chamomile for birds being good for calming?

I will look into that. Birdman, land of Vos is no longer available :(

Laura did mention chamomile flowers. I ordered some for Harry, she'll probably tell me to eat them, but we'll see. She likes to chew dried flowers. I've made chamomile tea for Harry when she's super agitated and it does seem to have a calming effect.

Is there no caffeine in it or something? When I think tea I think caffeine.

Check this out: herbs

Has lots of helpful info on chamomile and lots more as regards ekkies. I also put links to another section of this same site on another of your threads a little earlier. It's my favorite resource for ekkie diets.

Dani, you can make chamomile herbal tea with 2 tablespoons fresh or dry chamomile and two cups boiling water. No caffeine at all. Harry likes her tea with a slice of apple, a cinnamon stick, or a touch of honey. Let the tea cool to room temperature, all my parrots like a cup of tea occasionally.

Thanks everyone! This time tomorrow they will be home!

:30:Here's a silly question regarding the tea.... Do the birds just drink a couple sips out of a cup? Or what? (Sorry I'm having a hard time picturing Chiqui drinking a cup of tea with me)

The first time I made chamomile tea for my quaker, I wasn't sure how to get her to drink it, I put it in a crystal glass and held it up and she couldn't get enough. She wouldn't eat vegetables or fruit but she would drink juice. The other birds didn't want to miss out, so all my birds drink out of cups, except the budgies, they like to be different. The only problem with teaching them to drink from a cup or glass is you have to be careful to never leave any unauthorized beverages unattended.
