Jacob a sun conure who found me!
Ok so with risk of getting yelled at, I have learned an important lesson today. Im not used to birds, not used to dog bird combo either. (No he was not eaten).. I left him flying in my room, closed my door, went outside to tinkle my dog before the storm hit and all of a sudden I see Jacob flying out.. I was in chock.. I leave the outside door open as per usual, thinking birdy is safe right. Landlords dog opened my door to go in and steal Scooby's stuff, he does that from time to time but not often enough so I thought of it.

Now I know birdy is not used to flying outside, and he landed in a tree fairly close, I tuck the dog in and bring birdy's toys, treats etc out. He's squawking for me and I call back. But he is not coming down, hes flying around but far from low enough. BUt he's circling the house, I can tell he's trying to figure out the height thing like he did the day I found him. In my mind Im certain that he's not attempting to leave, I can tell again that he's climbing around trying to get closer but he is far from comprehending distance nor height.

After about 30 minutes it starts to drizzle, and 30 more after that birdy is soaked to the bone, there's thunder and lighting. He's sitting in a big oak, and every so often I call out to him to let him know Im stil lthere waiting. I don't want him to think that he's abandoned and thus panic. I hear him sqwaking his call for me that he does every so often and I respond. I know he hates flying when he's wet, sun comes out and starts drying him off, after a while he's dry again and now he starts circling the house again, he is now trying new trees to come closer to me. We had a couple of close ones that was eating away on me when I didn't succeed getting him..

I could clearly see that he wanted to come back to me.. So one time he is flying fairly low and I have my hopes up, a territorial bird comes and chases him off I see him flying much further away than he has before.. My heart sinks.. I let out my loudest whistle, you know you stick fingers in your mouth, he hears it and he comes back.. Now I feel sure about thats its just a matter of time.. so I go and sit down close to a tree that's low enough so I can reach him...

He looks at me, look at the tree I tell him Good boy, he flies and lands in the tree I grab a chair stand up on it, he's climbing through the branches to come down to me and he lets go and falls into my hands..

This is about 3 hours later, he's exhausted, hes now sitting on my shoulder, I have learned my lesson.. close ALL doors, lock them so dog can't open, put bird in cage when not WITH him at all times.. Im sorry I was stupid, it is amazing how he knows me though.. And now Im sad to say almost more sure that previous people didn't care enough to try to get him back..

Also as soon as I get the harness, he will be out and practice flying a lot more as well as recall...

Awwww how terrifying! It was a true and honest accident, I'm so glad he is back safe and sound now. A happy ending is a good ending.

 Oh my goodness what a scare!!! Jacob sure had a 3 hour adventure, and I bet your heart had quite a workout during that time. SO glad this had a happy ending for the both of you. :)

oh wow, what a day you both have had!!I think you should consider your self lucky you got him back, yay!!!!
good for you for thinking things thru,, and cooler heads prevailed
It was an honest mistake, we all make them, and a lesson well learned.
I love a happy ending :) :)

Wow, glad this had a happy ending and he is safe with you again. Now we know how he escaped from his last home.

What you say about the height thing is so true. I did my first outdoor recall training with my sun conure this Saturday and experienced 2 things I didn't fully understand until I saw it with my own eyes (but I read about it):

1. Our indoor birds do not inherently know how to swoop down from a high place. So to fly back down to you they need to almost spiral down ever so slowly and circle you till they're down your level. At least that was my experience. I'm sure they can eventually learn to hover or swoop vertically down, but my bird didn't know how just because he's never had to from a high altitude.

2. Wind or a slight breeze can really set their maneuvering skills way off. I can see how birds can get lost if they get flung far away by the wind and lose sight of their human.

I'm glad it worked out! You and your birdie are very lucky! Don't beat yourself up too much, as accidents happen. I know this all too well.

I am so glad you got him back. Accidents happen and at least it has a happy ending thanks to you. :)

Try not to be too hard on yourself. Good job!

Thanks guys for not beating up on me.. Ive done enough of that today... After coming in he would not leave me at all. He was terrified of loosing me again. As I said he wasn't trying to escape, he was following me outside and got scared of the big bad world not knowing how to really navigate it. And I really find what Boom boom says interesting, cause he really didn't know how to navigate to me.. more than once he tried to but he passed me with 4 5 inches away.. It was that that made me stay out there, I was just a soaked as he was, but I wanted him to know that I wasn't leaving him.. Finally he worked it out, he didn't wanna leave me at all, he did the call he did the first day I heard him, when we were close he'd do the head bobbing (mate dance), he wanted me to come and get him and I wasnt high enough and he wasn't low enough.. But he didn't wanna loose me... I hoped that he'd figure it out like last time and finally he did... His body language and intent was clear, or he would have flown far far away and not cared.. I could feel his distress, afterwards we were watching tv and he nuzzled up at my neck and fell asleep. He was stuck on my head all evening even in the bathroom, I didn't have the heart of removing him from me, he got anxiety when I put him in the cage and was stressed first before he settled again.. I feel so bad for him getting such a scare.. Hopefully my harness arrives tomorrow and Im gonna train him and he's gonna get a recall command as well, granted we had already started working on that and he did respond to it. I told him come on, and he'd try.. He was such a good bird trying to get to me.. If I have had a ladder it woul dhave been done so much sooner.. But Im gonna be honest, I dont think I could give him away now even if new landlord said no.. I would likely have to find another place, he clearly loves me, and only if I find his owners will I give him back.. I'd feel like a pos if I gave him away..

Don't batter yourself up about it - you've got him back and that's whats important.

Here's my experience, so I know how you feel!

It is a horrible thing watching them try and try to get to you but just can't! He's home now and you know to be more careful and stuff - lesson learnt and no harm done! :)

Mistakes WILL be made with your bird, but you've done one of the biggest ones straight off the bat, so I'm sure it won't happen again ;)

We all do stuffs like this but we also learn from it so at least you know not to do it again. Just be thankful that he loves you enough to come back. So that shows you have a good relationship going there!!!

But I gotta comment on what you said that you don't think the previous owners didn't care for him enough to try to get him. You'd be amazed how far they will fly as there was a story awhile back with a Cockatiel that flew several towns away and it took them a long time before reunited once again. Or sometimes they may have gotten stolen and they got lose. Stuffs like that do happen. If you tried your best and no one comes forward, then you can proceed forward with Jacob as you two already have a pretty good bond going on.

Oops, must have missed that. I second what Mikey said. Birds can spook and with the wind be taken SO very far with very little control from birds that are not used to free flying. They can cover MILES within hours. He might be missed by someone, maybe advertise on craigslist and let your vets know. Does he have a ring number? Jot it down and tell NOONE. Use it to identify their owners if they come forward.

You realize that you were incredibly lucky right? The previous owners could have had the exact same thing happen to them. For all you know maybe the conure stayed around this time because it knew what would happen if it wandered off.

Birds can easily escape well beyond human reach outside. First, a bird's instinct is to fly when something scares them. They do not have a homing instinct. Normally their flock can just fly and keep up with them. Secondly, captive birds do not know how to deal with wind. A strong wind can easily take a bird far, far away. I don't understand why you would be critical of the previous owners for losing a bird that you almost just lost yourself.

So happy you were able to get Jacob back safe and sound:)

So pleased you and Jacob had a happy ending. You did very well, I think.

Not being that critical, I said that Im almost more sure.. He has had a loving owner at some point, that I know cause of how awesome he is. However Ive made it easy to find him, even if they are in another town. The bird rescues handles the whole of LI area of lost and found, not just a town. So both Nassau and Suffolk has my info as well as the local avian vet, the Animal care and control (but that is for my area), he's posted on CL and I put a poster up in the local super market.. and I haven't got a PEEP, it... And after seeing how hard he worked to come back to me, I have no doubt in my mind that he was trying to go back to his old owner too. I don't mean to sound mean or anything but that makes me feel sad about it that's all hence it feels like they don't care (not saying they don't but the whole situation makes me sad and that makes it feel like it, dont mean they don't). I'd love to find out his owner and reunite them. Im in the world of rescuing, seeing animals coming back home is my favorite thing.

I have one scenario in my mind.. Who has a lot of time for a birdy? Who may not always be good with computers or even have one? Who can't run after a birdy? A little old lady... Cause I can't see someone raising this bird and then not care so Ive been trying to figure out reasons to why he's not found yet...

Also how far can they fly? A sun conure is missing in NJ, is there a chance that's him?

Hm, are the states next to each other? I don't know much about the USA but they can travel SIGNIFICANT distances. Which means they could very well cross state lines with no real problem.

Does he have a leg band?

Its fairly far away and over water.. but it is next state over, and no he's band less.. Tomorrow we will check for chip, I have now also contacted news 12 thinking that IF it is a littleold lady she may not know how to navigate theinternet hence which may be why he's not found. Im hoping they wanna do a little snippet about him.. We will see..

But they can't survive winters can they?

He could have gone around the water :)
I'm not saying it IS from a different state, or that someone even cares that they've lost their birdy. But by looking around you can see. But for the time being you can have a blast with the little guy. :)

I'm so glad you got him back!! What a scare!!! Accidents happen though, and we can only learn from them, and not take a beating..that hurts too much ^.^

I rescued my little dog from a shelter. He was found in a parking lot..and folks were saying he could have gotten lost, or jumped out of a car. I tried to keep an open mind in case someone came a-lookin for him, but I knew my heart would break, I just couldn't see my life without his little presence anymore. Luckily no one came..so I didn't have to fight tooth and nail ^.^ He's the best, sweetest little dog and he's mine furever!! HOoray for irresponsible owners!

Oh my goodness! Super scary for you.
It is so horrible when you blame yourself for something that was truly an accident. I am so glad to hear that Jacob is safe. As you say, it taught you something so maybe it was a blessing (now that we know he is safe!)
It is also good for you to post it on here as it may prevent others from going through a similar experience!
