Aww I love this post :)

So are the parents tame? I would think that if you could handle the parents that the young would be pretty tame as well. They learn by watching their parents.

Sodakat, Thank you so much for the valuable and priceless infomation. I see that I'd have made a mistake straight off if you hadn't of posted Laurella's write up.

You are very welcome. Laurella is a valuable resource and very willing to have her information reposted anywhere it is helpful as long as the entire post is repeated so there is no misunderstanding.

She knows Eclectus and has the ability to put solid information into concise wording.

I think it is very important to respect new birds and to try to get an understanding of the individual differences of each species we keep.

Another question if you don't mind. :) We live in the country and have a water softener. None of us, including the animals, drink it. We have a filter that purifies it. But we do bathe in it. I bought a shower perch for Carli and now I'm wondering if it's ok for her to bathe in it. Our dogs do, but they don't have feathers. If course the water company said there's not enough salt in the water to cause any problems but I'd like some input from you all. Does anyone else use a water softener? Or maybe I should start a new thread?

I don't know anything about water softeners. My husband says the carbonate ions are replaced with sodium ions. He's a mega fishkeeper.

I do know people with water softeners who shower their Eclectus with no problems.

I don't know anything about water softeners. Sorry I can't help you there either.

Thanks Sodakat and peeker.
And Sodakat, if your hubby is a fish keeper I'll will trust his judgment as I have the utmost respect for them. I've had tanks including a saltwater and know how particular you have to be to maintain them. May I ask what kind of fish he has or is that off topic?

Discus are his passion. He has about 6 or 8 producing pairs, some juveniles in large tanks and a planted wild tank he's hoping to see some pairing from at some point in the future. Also black angelfish, rams and freshwater shrimp.

I don't think anything is off topic in threads I start!! :)

Discus are terrific. Beautiful fish. Mine came to the top and I could hand feed them. I've never seen a black angel fish. Does he have a website or pics on Facebook?
