- B&G Macaw, Galah, 5 cockatiels, 50 billion and a half budgies. We breed and do rescue. Too many to list each individual's name and age etc, but they are each individuals and loved dearly.
I know that isn't super old for a parrot, or even for a tiel, but it boggles my mind anyway. How can the little bird who preened my hair at the pet shop as I decided between other birds until I realized the decision had been made for me, be turning eighteen years old? Seems like just yesterday he squeaked at me for the first time, the way he does all sweet and soft and quiet when you get the scritches just right. It blows my mind that it was so long ago. But when I think about it, Alex is there in most of my memories. He is only 11 years younger than I am, and he was the third bird I ever had. My parents bought him for me about a week after my precious first ever bird, Tweety Bird had died.
We've been through a lot together, my yellow screaming grumpy millet shark and I. He's gotten out a few times, and once was even out overnight! He's been sick before, but nothing serious(thank god, and knock on wood). He means so incredibly much to me, and has completely shaped who I am as a person.
I'm happy and greatful for each day, week, month, and year I have with him. With any luck, there will be many more ahead. He doesn't act like a spring chicken anymore, but he's no old duck, either. With any luck he's got many many more years, but I still try to treasure each day with him.
Alright. How do I throw a party for a grumpy old man cockatiel's 18th birthday? I gotta get to planning something, 18 seems like an important birthday, even for a parrot.
