Hi, this morning my parrot fell off its perch and suddenly started shaking, like it was having a fit and started making a loud squawking noise and its eyed rolled into the back of its head. We took her to a ordinary vets, when she was there she suddenly chirped up and was squawking and moving around, when they gave her antibiotics under her tongue she passed out and they had to give her oxygen. We’ve brought her home as no exotic vets nearby are open until tomorrow. Shes currently sat in her cage in the corner, occassionally squawking and closing her eyes and reopening them. we really don’t know what to do, i’ll be very surprised if she makes it through the night if i’m honest. Any suggestions?

I don't have AG, but I think they are prone to calcium deficiency? Do a little reading on that topic. Good luck.

Hi, I am based in Blackburn, England. I’ve spoken to a vet at a exotic surgery who advised to wait until tomorrow. But I can’t see how that will help

Thank you Merlinsmom, I really think this is what it could be. I had a read and can see I can feed her carrots, so i’ve given her a little bit which shes nearly eaten, but now shes stopped and just sat there at the moment. Any fast ways to resolve it? Or is it just a waiting game?

I think there are drops? The article mentioned feeding milk in an emergency. Just something to get you until tomorrow?

Gonna have more of a read up, she’s still sat on the bottom of her cage, but her breathing seems more steady and she seems more steady on her feet. She’s also still eating carrots.

I agree it sounds like calcium deficiency! My Smokey had a bout with that where it looked like she was drunk..stumbling and falling over. I rushed her to her CAV (Certified Avian Vet) and the doctor gave her a shot and within minutes she was fine.
There are calcium suppliments you can add to food and water I suggest you go to a pet store and purchase some. Some vets even carry liquid you can add to water.

Good Luck!!

Hello,

I’m no bird expert. But, the symptoms you describe sounds like a seizure.
Maybe a seizure due to a calcium deficiency, like most others have suggested?
I would get her to a CAV ASAP.

Good Luck.

Yeah I really think it is calcium defiency, currently in my way to a pet shop to check for some calcium suppliments

"Tums" (the stomach tablets) is almost half pure calcium. The rest is corn starch, sucrose and talc. I don't know if this is a great idea but if his symptoms get worse you might see if he wants to lick or nibble on a tablet.

Also calcium fortified Orange Juice would be excellent for him everyday. Just don't replace clean water.

Will be taking her to a CAV as soon as possible, none available until tomorrow. Will keep you updated

also crushed egg shell in his/her food wouldn't hurt.

Just updating you all, we have had her put down. The CAV said she was very very ill and it was the best thing for her. Thanks for your help.

The vet said something regarding her liver, I didn’t ask for too much detail as I didn’t want to get too upset.
