Hello! I recently inherited Celeste, a sweet yet feisty 4 year old female budgie. She was my dear aunt's bird who passed and she needed a home so I happily took her in. But I've never had a bird before and I want to help her be happy, healthy and comfortable so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Our house is very small and we live in the northern part of the States so it gets quite cold in the winter and a woodstove is our primary source of heat. Her cage is in a corner of the family room. It's a bright room and the cage is near a big window so she sees the bird feeder outside. Unfortunately it's also in front of another window... but I put a quilt over that window to try and keep her warm from drafts. The only other option for her cage was a study upstairs but it's quite quiet up there and I thought she would feel lonely. We also have a cat... but Celeste and the cat seem to have gotten used to each other because we did a slow introduction.
I think she's adjusted to her new environment okay. I got her a Puresun Mini light that I'm turning on 1/2-1 hour per day. She was enjoying being misted with water back in October when we got her but now that it's cold she doesn't seem into it any more. I've tried to *Slowly* give her new toys and add in a fresh piece of fruit or veggie here and there but she's not into any of it! She avoids anything new. She also won't let me come too close, she always lunges to bite if I attempt a finger near her.
The house temperature gets down to 60-65 at night but I wrap her cage in a couple warm towels. I've thought about bringing her upstairs to the bathroom at night where it stays warmer but I'm not sure if it's okay to move her cage like that daily.
I'd love to let her fly around but due to the woodstove and the cat I'm too nervous. I've started to let her move around the bathroom when I clean her cage. She's aprehensive about this too but she seems like she's warming up to the idea.
Anyways, thanks for reading! I'd soo appreciate any advice on how to help her be more comfortable both in her environment and with me. It be great to be able to give her healthy fresh treats too!
