Adopted my first conure

Puck behaved similarly when I first got him.

I was afraid my boyfriend was going to be the favorite too! He still gets more excited to see him than he does to see me, but I am definitely his mommy. Puck apparently is just very social and likes to see new people, and people he doesn't see all the time. Puck only tries to mate with me and my boyfriend (lol), but it almost seems like the less frequently he sees somebody, the happier he is to see them. He loooooves most strangers!

Well, Rowdy definitely loves me, but she does prefer men. She is a shameless little flirt. She just hasn't met a man who loves her like I do. If she did, she would probably want to go home with him.

We thought Pete hated women, but he loves me, too. I think he just hated the woman his former owner married (or was jealous). That's why he lost his home of nearly 3 decades.

Many birds do have favorite people though. And sometimes they will switch allegiances, first loving the woman, then the man, then the woman again, etc. This can be hard and confusing for families.

Try not to let it upset you. He obviously doesn't hate you. He isn't attacking you or biting you. One of my conures did hate my ex bf, and I mean, she hated him! It was hard because his feelings were hurt about it.

thanks that does give me some hope that he will come around.

It is a bit disappointing though cause my boyfriend did not want me to get another bird but i did it anyways now these two have fallen in love and the bird that was supossed to be my buddy to keep me company wants nothing to do with me.

I will keep trying though

I am making some progress with him now he will step onto my shoulder sometimes but he wont let me touch him at all. Not that he will bite me he has never tried that with me but he will run away or hide if i try to touch him. Although if i have something he wants as a treat then i am good enough especially if it is a pecan. My boyfriend on the other hand has made excellent progress with him chewy was preening him today and when my boyfriend layed down on the bed beside me with chewy they ended up falling asleep together for about 20 mins.

Then after that my boyfriend went to get some food brought it back into the room and chewy got all excited i said chewy is being a mooch and wants some of the food so my boyfriend took a small piece and offered it through the bars of the cage i laughed and told him no thats not what he wants. He wants the whole plate so i got him to offer chewy the plate and share and sure enough chewy came out and ate cottage cheese off his plate.

I see such a bond forming between them its pretty cute actually and i am getting better at not being jealous. My boyfriend used to be convinced that there was no bird in the world that could ever be as special and as interesting as his budgie and while the budgie is pretty cool it just does not have as much personality as a conure. Now he sees i was right and loves the conure. He got upset with me that i wanted to post pictures of chewy here before he even got to see them and he has never been like that not even with pictures of our daughter lol.

it is a good thing though that he is getting used to larger birds as i am due to inherit my dad's b&g macaw sometime in the next few years i would suspect as my dads health is not good and my boyfriend is quite scared of her. So conditioning him now with something that has a beak bigger than a budgie's is good since the macaw probably has a good 50 years left in her probably more if she stays healthy and i wont give her up she is my baby and has been for many years. my dad thinks she is his bird but i have always had a special bond with her and am the only one of all my siblings who can handle her. Plus if chewy adopts my boyfriend and only tolerates me it is a great excuse to get the baby conure like i wanted. I just have to decide if i would want another green cheek or explore other types of conures. If i did get another bird it wont be for at least a few months yet though since i will be having major surgery at the end of this month one new bird is ok but two new birds and surgery would be a bit much and cause i want to spoil chewy a bit before i go getting another bird.

He needs a bigger cage for sure. The one he came in is ok but just barely ok and i like my birds to have lots of room to move in their cages

So the last couple days i have been noticing a bit of a change in chewy. I have not been as focused on him for the last couple days I open the cage for him to come out if he wants but dont try to handle him at all. I sometimes talk to him a little bit but have mostly been leaving him alone giving him a bit of time without bugging him hoping that maybe he will be a bit more willing to accept me.

During this time he has been being very vocal and has been trying to talk i cant really make out what the words are that he is trying to say but he is trying.

Does this have any relation to him starting to be more comfortable here?

I am also wondering about another thing... if i leave the room for more than a few mins he starts this awful cry sound and it tends to sound more panicked the longer i am gone for I know he is probably ok but i worry that he is hurt or something when he makes that noise it sounds just that awful like he is in pain or something. we also worry that maybe out kitten got to him as she is stalking the birds we try to keep her out of the room where the birds are but she can be sneaky because of this when we hear his screams either me or my boyfriend or both will come check on him.

Are we doing the wrong thing and possibly training him to do that all the time?

Is it normal for them to do that sort of thing?
