How do I get my YNA to use the abrasive (nail trimming) perch I spent $25.00 on?
I have had it mounted next to his cage in plain view so he is not afraid of it. I have mounted it near his favorite place to perch but slightly higher.
I have transferred him from my hand to this wonderful perch and he gets off as soon as he can. Really he does not act afraid, I know what fear looks like in my amazon.
He just sits uncomfortably next to his food and water dish at the opposite side of the cage.

Maybe the feel is just strange to him?
I recall that the Rb was very suspicious of them at first, but it's worth the wait and effort. They eliminated nail-trimming, which was always so stressful for me and the Rb. It took a few years, but I eventually established a pattern/rotation that keeps him trimmed. I haven't had to do his nails in decades. I keep a dowel as the main "highway" down the middle of the cage, but the special cement/trimmer/textured perches are all over.
A few brands I like... but there are many: Polly's Sand Walk... Pumice Perch... Trimmer Perch...
Is it a weird color or shape? A lot of them are so bright and weird-looking, for some reason.
Good luck!

Just imagine yourself as a bird, and you have the option of a ragged, abrasive perch to sit on or a nice, smooth wood perch? I'd choose the wood, too. It's probably just uncomfortable for him right now, that's all. Is there a way to hang a foraging toy above it somehow, or near a tasty treat?

You'd think that itzjbean but my gcc prefers his rougher perches.

Only a suggestion but you have a play stand you can attach it to in his room to start with, then you can gauge when he's chill enough you can put it in his cage. Once there I'd put it in his favourite spot. My bird has 2, where he sleeps, and the top perch (not the same place) where he stares at me and jumps around to come out (accidental trained behaviour on both our parts, but not with reason anymore).

Goodluck!

My avian vet says that pedi perches are not a good idea. Reason being that a birds feet will get sores leading to pain. You can have the birds nails trimmed or file.

I will agree that a lot of care needs to be taken in introducing them, but my CAV is okay with them, and in fact, complimented the Rb's feet as having good scales at our last visit. I've used them for 20-plus years, and haven't had to trim his nails in ages. I do also agree that if you're not VERY careful, you're better off sticking to regular perches and trims.

my YNA is to fast for me to towel.
I may try turning off the lights before covering him with the towel.
I just don't want to get him more PO at me than I have to.

I have a California Santa Cruz cage and in the front left corner is the food bowl and that's where I placed my cement perch. So whenever he eats he has to step onto it and that's the only time he's on that perch.

I used one with Salty as his sleeping perch, becasue he is almost never in his cage except to sleep. It did work in trimming his claws, actually too much, since at a vet visit a few months ago ( you guys remember - when he clocked himself falling) and the vet said his claws were way too short, almost nubbins she said. so I switched back to a natural bark sleeping perch and they have regrown. The trick she said is to switch them around every so often, to cut them back, but not to the point where they cant grab stuff confidently. So thats what I do, a month with, a month without. Works for us.

I think my Bingo is stubborn enough that he would rather starve than stand on that perch.
This won't be the first time I have wasted money on something (toys usually) that my Fids refuse to use.
When it's "for there own good" is when it's most likely to go unused.
Sigh..

I've been there quite a few times myself as well. I think if you were to place the perch in front of his food and water dish with some of his favorite treats on the perch you could lure him too it and he would realize it's not so bad after all.
