A warm hello from a newbie! And any advice welcome!

Hi there everyone!

So happy to announce that my new baby for life was received on Christmas Eve. She is a beautiful Harlequin! She is the sweetest girl that I ever met!!! I am in love! I have attached a photo of her here! Any advice on keeping her sweet? What about at home DIY nail clipping? Anyone have any experience with the Marc Morrone macaw leash? Info on ways to keep macaws fully flighted and not lose them before they are trained to come back, while taking them out with you? Please feel free to share! Tell me about your babies and experiences too! Looking forward to hearing from all of you soon!:blue1::red1:

Welcome, she is gorgeous! Congratulations =)
I have personally had a couple of loose bird scares (including one today) so I would keep her on a harness a d lead until you trust her recall 100% including being able to get her down from high places! That's the hard part trying to convince them to come down once they get a fright and end up high because for birds usually high feels safe! There is always a risk but it's very rewarding, a friend of mine has a ruby macaw who free flies. There have been a couple of occasions where he has gone for a couple of days but where I live we don't have a huge amount of predators for a bird that size! Also keep evening feed times regular with a shake of the treat jar just before dinner. This can be useful if you ever do run into trouble and need some extra encouragement down from a high spot! I hope that at least some of that makes sense!

I don't have experience with macaws but just wanted to say Hi and Welcome to you and your beautiful baby!!

Welcome to the forum. :)

What a BEAUTIFUL girl you got there!! What's her name, and how old is she?

Here is a discussion about the Marc Marrone leg leash: http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/35762-leg-leashes-coming-back.html
I'd personally try to get her into a harness than a leg leash.

As for keeping her sweet: Spend quality time with her, don't let her intimidate and/or scare you, and just love her, and the rest should fall into place.

Clipping nails is quite easy, IMO. IF necessary, I use extremely sharp clippers and take the tips off. Fortunately I haven't had to do that in ages. When using a variety of perches and different thicknesses of perches, they keep them worn down pretty well themselves. :)

Thanks for the information Jersey Wendy! I will check out the link on the leashes and try the perches for sure!

Beautiful girl. Welcome.

Thanks Latosha, Antoinette , Terry57! Her name is Lyric. I didn't pick it she did. We had a list of names, maybe 30 different names that she never acknowledged and for some reason when I would mention the word LYRIC she would turn and look at me. One day, I mentioned Lyric she honked. Another day I mentioned Lyrics she looked at me, honked and then flew to me. So my daughter said...ok mommy that is her name because anytime we mention Lyrics or a lyric she gets excited.....so Lyric it is!!!

Lyric is a beautiful name! My daughter had thought about that name for a future baby if it was a girl:)

Which type of bird are you planning to add to your flock in the future?

Lol...I actually meant a human baby when my daughter has one:D

She hasn't gotten that far yet, still in the planning stage for the future. She is getting married in July:)
