I went to my local shelter and they have a little shop in it and they were selling a starter kit... It was a tiny round cage!!! They adopt out lots of lovebirds, keets and tiels so are they encouraging people to put a bird in that!?! I dont get why they would do this :(

Most likely it was donated and they don't know that a round cage isn't good for birds :(

Sorry about sounding ignorant but why are round cages bad for birds? My Senal Parrot (years ago) came in a round cage and I kept him in it.

Round cages don't give the bird enough room or enough security usually :(

Usually, round cages are more tall than wide, and there is no back wall for the bird to retreat to and feel safe.

I asked the same question and got one answer that seemed logical; birds like to have a cage with corners that they can pretend to hide in, it makes them feel safe.

That is very interesting!

I never thought of that. Come to think of it, whenever Bitty has her quiet preening times, she is usually parked in one of the corners.

Makes sense!

On a sort of related note...I am an avid fisherman. One of the most hard to use live baits is Shad. Shad can't be kept alive in a live well with corners (which most boats have). The whole bunch of them will crowd their noses into the same corner and asphyxiate from the low oxygen. You have to get a special round well so they keep swimming round and round.

Funny how it works the opposite.
