I recently was given a pair of greenwing macaws who are ill... sensitivity tests are back.... E coli and enterobacter... treatment is baytril first, and then vet said gentimycin... I am looking into using Trimeth/Sulfa instead because gentimycin is super rough in kidneys and is easily overdosed because it dehydrates birds...

So I did two weeks treatment for giardia, now we are on baytril for 14 days (injectable), will start fluconazole at one week in (orally), continue for two weeks and then onto (hopefully) Trimeth/Sulfa (if I can find injectable). What a vet bill :(

So, it'll be a LONG month or so.

(Only visible symptoms... one was mildly emaciated and papillae were gone) the other had some feather shredding behavoir and a slightly slimy throat.

I wouldn't like to even guess, what that is all gonna add up to.
I hope the birds get better soon, with no adverse side effects.... and you win the Lottery. ;)

My vet is VERY good to me, and allows me to send off my tests to a different lab (which is much cheaoer), then he looks ober the results and discusses the bird with me for no charge and then he sells me meds at near cost. He only does this for "new" or "rescue" birds, my long term birds are all regular cost, but since my birds are almost never ill it is absolutely wonderful that he only charges cost for the rescue birds... (or our new birds).

Of course considering how many other animals I have (everyone goes to the same clinic wgich is owneed by our main vet)... he sees our dogs, cats, horses, and cattle. Then the avian/small animal vet is the employee of our main vet.... very handy :)

You definitely got a good deal with that vet. :)

I know... my horse and bird friends always jokingly accuse me of having some sort of affair with him... but really he's a nice guy and he makes a lot of money off of our horses...lol

I am hoping for the best for your green wings. They are my favorite macaws & I will be getting one next season. That is so nice of your vet to do all that for you.

Keep us posted on tv GWs progress toward recovery.
