A horrifying bloody mess

Scary. A while ago, Robin had a broken blood feather, and I nervously wrapped him in a towel and took hemostats and yanked it out (which stops the bleeding) Whew!! I knew it hurt, and I know he knew I was being as gentle as possible and trying to help him.

I guess I was lucky many years ago when I had a Cockatiel who would pull all of his own broken blood feathers out by the root! You know how often tiels break blood feathers, and he'd take care of the problem himself every time. I'd see blood spattered everywhere, and bloody feathers pulled out by the root at the cage bottom, and the bird sitting there being just fine.

I had actually tried flour. I got a tablespoon full of it and dipped his toe in a few times, but it did nothing. Kiwi just wouldn't sit still long enough for it to do anything.

You have to just pour a bunch on it and push against the cut area, it will quit pretty quick. I don't deal with the kitchen in my house so I dunno where my partner puts the stuffs so I grab whatever I can find quick, it's usually flour I use cause that's the easiest item to find...lol....

Well, I am actually taking this as the kick in the...rear end:21: I've been needing to get Kiwi's stuff a little more organized. I got some of those plastic drawer units and one drawer will be my specific 'grooming and first aid' drawer so this situation never happens again. I did find the other jar of styptic as I tore the apartment upside down today because I wanted to know where it went. The jar was in fact close to the medicine cabinet, but had unfortunately somehow made it into the very back of the black hole that is my husbands 'drawer' in the bathroom:52: I don't think I've ever looked in his drawer as I have no reason, but I'm surprised I wasn't finding lost artifacts of antiquity in there:09: Anyways, back to Kiwi- his first aid and emergency supplies will now be kept in an entirely different area than our stuff (as it probably should be) so they do not get mixed in by accident with our stud leading to us being unable to find them when we actually need them.

KiwiB.

My gosh. Don't beat yourself up so badly over this. He's in wonderful shape and probably easily handled the "trauma". Disposition is as important as anything. As you wrote, he seemed fine and Im sure he was.

It's not a bad idea to keep multiples. At 8 bux a jar, consider having three or four Styptic Powder jars in the home, particularly when keeping Exotics .... One on every floor, in frequently opened cabinets, so you always are reminded where they are.

I've got 3 GSD's and 3 parrots and keep one (of many) Styptic Powder jar in the knives and forks drawer, so my kids even know where to find one.

Corn starch works almost as well. Flour has a smaller effect, as it has much gluten in it, so it's not quite a thickening agent as corn starch.

Regardless, keep up the good work with your beautiful Blue Front!

I actually suggested something similar under the Suggestions Thread, Joe. And for this exact reason. The Administrator is looking into it, but said it would take some time. Fingers crossed!

OMG you are such a good bird Mom. When I had my cockatiel Sam, I came home to a bloody cage. A pin feather had broken and bled. Learned a lot that day. I know you are an excellent bird mom to Kiwibird, keep us updated. But I know he's doing great.
