Hello!

I am a brand new member here: thank you for the warm welcome!

We just brought Lyze home on Thursday and he is adjusting well. He (we think he's a he anyways) likes to chat and has already stepped up on my finger a few times.

I'm wondering if I should consider a second tiel? If only for the simple fact that I wouldn't mind having two and I know how social birds, especially tiels can be. I'm wary because I do want a hand tame bird and I have heard so many times before that two birds will bond with each other and not their humans.

My husband and I work opposite schedules, so there is usually someone always home to give him company and if he gets lonely, Lokibird the Parrotlet is right across the living room to chat with, so that isn't the issue. I just want to do what is best for my new baby so I wanted to get opinions from fellow bird lovers. Thanks!

Cockatiels are very social, with humans and other birds, Lyze is young, he will probably be happy in your home with or without a cockatiel companion. There's really no guarantee how any two birds will interact, they may form a bond, they may be friendly, they may fight, most birds in the same home will tolerate each other even if they don't become good friends. Cockatiels are prolific breeders, you may want to consider that if you don't want a surprise down the road.

I have a flock of 4 cockatiels right now. Casey, my first tiel, remains as sweet and friendly (and demanding of scritches) as ever! I've had her for over 14 years and she's turning 15 later this year.

The other tiels have been rehomes and although not tame and friendly like Casey, they have learned to accept and trust humans more now after working with them a little.

In my own experience, I've found it easier to work with multiple birds rather than one because monkey see, monkey do. If one bird is willing to do something, then a second bird may follow suit.

Of course, your own experience could differ.
