I am babysitting a IRN for a couple days. He is a sweet little thing. The owners showed me what he eats am/pm, and said he likes apples, grapes and broccoli but I could offer him some of Kiwis birdie bread and stuff if I wanted. Just wanted to be sure there aren't any things an IRN can't eat that an amazon can? I'm making some apple/banana bread, veggie bread (carrots, green beans, corn, potato) for Kiwi. They also both contain organic whole wheat flour and egg with finely crushed egg shell. I'm also making some sweet potato balls, that also have the egg and egg shell (and seed, but the bird eats seed).

I am completely unfamiliar with them, so just some basic idea if those are safe since I would like the little guy to like me enough to come out and food is a strong motivator(which they also said was fine if he came out, and he does step up and is friendly). Kind of odd to be taking care of a bird that isn't a zon or too'. Thanks!

Overall IRNs follow the same generalized diet an amazon would, so what you're feeding him is fine :) They don't have any specific food requirements like lories or eclectus parrots. I'm quite jealous! I can't wait to have my baby. You should take a picture or two!

Thanks for the info. I think he might like a little treat since he is quite bonded to the lady and I'm basically a total stranger to him;) He's not actually staying with us, so I'm not sure how they'd feel about me taking photos in their home. And he's a plucker, so especially not sure on how they'd feel of photos for that reason:( Really sweet bird though, bonded to his owner and VERY talkative, which as far as I'm aware, aren't common attributes for IRNs.

Are you getting an IRN?

Indian ringnecks can make excellent talkers if they're in a social environment, they have the cutest voices! And yes, I am getting one soon :) End of May is when I'll get my baby :D IRN's have been a favorite of mine for a long time, but I didn't want to get a second parrot until I was in a comfortable routine with Avery.

That's such a shame about the plucking :( I'm sure your treats will cheer him right up! It's really hard when parrots have to go without their bonded person... no wonder us parronts make such excellent hermits :p
