CONGRATULATIONS POPPY!!!

1st Solo Flight November 3, 2015

I'm still in shock and deliriously happy! Poppy ran up to my shoulder today, launched herself into the air and flew! She flew through a doorway, around a corner, descended and landed on her feet! It was incredible. She was so proud of herself, she kept saying Poppy, Poppy! I cried happy tears while I hugged her.

We don't think Poppy ever fledged and we know she was kept clipped for the first eight years of her life. We've never clipped her wings and even had a vet tell us there was no physical reason she couldn't fly. We've waited more than two years!!! I'm so happy for her.

I'm not sure why she chose today! She must have stayed up late reading Christine and BB's, 'Fly's Like A Rock' thread. Maybe she thought I really would throw her, slingshot her, or launch her off a catapult. Okay, maybe I mentioned shoving her out of an aircraft. I'm glad her flight lessons didn't come to that. I hope she loved the sensation. I can't wait to watch her use those beautiful wings every day!

STILL have goosebumps over this, Allee!!! And my eyes got wetter than usual!

This was a HUUUUGE milestone! This was an ENORMOUS accomplishment!!!!!

I wish I could have seen your face...and Poppy's! :D:D:D

Please give her some lovin' from Aunt Wendy before you tuck her in for the night, and please whisper the following in her sweet ear: "Way to go, Poppy-Girl....please show mommy again what you can do with those gorgeous wings of yours." :smile015:

That is absolutely phenomenal! I'm so glad that Poppy has finally discovered the wonderment of what she's born to do - fly. I look forward to hearing more progression and I can only imagine the look of excitement on both of your faces after that moment. :D!

And I have to admit - I laughed really hard at your aircraft comment. And also at that hilarious thread... I couldn't breathe for awhile after reading it all. Poppy likely read it and was terrified you would employ some of those catapult tactics, so she beat you to the punch!

I forgot to say that I was LMBO @ She must have stayed up late reading Christine and BB's, 'Fly's Like A Rock' thread. Maybe she thought I really would throw her, slingshot her, or launch her off a catapult.

Just wait 'til it happens again, Allee. It will be JUST as special!!! JUST as magical, too. Don't know when that will be, but there WILL be follow-ups. :D

Wow what an awesome day for you both! Nothing more beautiful then watching our babies fly as they were ment to do! :light: brillant absolutely brilliant :light:

Go Poppy! Congrats to you two allee! Really happy for you!

Great job Poppy :). Allee, it's such a good feeling to see something for the first time like that!

Congratulations Poppy!!

That is fantastic, Allee! Seems her First Solo wasn't a meager flutter but a cross-home adventure! I suppose you weren't able to perform the traditional "cutting of the shirt" or in this case a minor U-shaped trim of her feathers!! :D

WHAT an achievement! Poppy, everyone over here at the BrownHouse is cheering for you! I remember the day Dominic first chose to try flying and how proud he was with his hat in the air and his beautiful wings outstretched. We're all so glad you got to have that feeling, Poppy. Looking forward to hearing lots more reports of your successful flights around home (with pics, please). Lots of love from the Brown Phloque. XXXXXXXXX

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?

That's amazing! Way to go, Poppy! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for you and Poppy both, Allee! I can imagine how filled with joy you are now that this milestone has been passed!

And what a first flight! Through a doorway and around a corner? Both are things flight newbies sometimes find daunting. Most impressive, Poppy!

I'll have to let Maya know that she's lost one of her fellow conscientious objectors to the world of aviation. I'm sure she'll be less than pleased. Hahaha!

Please give Poppy a few extra treats for me.

Thank You, Everyone! I've passed along the sweet compliments and extra treats! Poppy's in a cheery mood today but she's a little distracted, she's trying to imitate a crowing rooster but so far it's an epic fail. She can't quack properly either, the Quakers will tease her.

Scott, I would love to do the traditional, 'cutting of the shirt', if she only had one. Maybe a molted feather could work.

Doc, Maya, BB, Poppy and all the other conscientious objectors to aviation know what they know. I hope Poppy will continue to take flight now that she's tried it and I hope all of her friends discover the benefits too. It was an amazing experience for me, like watching a toddler take off on a bike for the first time. I really didn't know if it would ever happen until yesterday.

Way to go Poppy. That is fabulous news. :D

Don't worry about not being able to quack. Try meowing or woofing or mooing. That is what Millie does now. And she reckons it is way more fun than quacking. :)

Sadly, Poppy isn't racking up frequent flyer miles, in fact after her spectacular solo flight, no amount of coaxing can get her to flap her wings. She waves her foot when she wants a ride or she climbs and waddles to get where she's going.

A couple of days ago, Poppy greeted her dad with a very load, very clear, Quack, Quack, Quack! We both cracked up at her. Until now the best she could do was Kwock, Kwock, Kwock! I guess she's using her brain power on language skills rather than improving her flying.

Poppy is a wise bird! It has been my experience that exercise gives one palpitations and is therefore bad for the heart. See how clever Poppy knows to conserve her strength? Instead, she's developing her brain power as a clever birdie should. Love Poppy! XX

Poppy is probably a very careful flyer! Checking the weather once, twice, making sure the facilities at the planned landing point are proper, verifying the airways are not overly crowded, etc!

She'll probably surprise you just as much as the first time!!

I'm trying to be patient but now that I've seen her fly it's even harder to wait until next time.
