Im DeAnn and having lurked around this forum for the past couple of months on and off, and have gathered so much information from all of your posts, I almost don't feel like a newbie here LOL :) and having decided yesterday to go forward in purchasing a U2 baby, I guess I should stop hanging in the shadows LOL .. Hey ya'll :)

2. When I first started thinking of purchasing a U2, I stumbled upon the notion that genuinely dumbfounded me to be perfectly honest I had NO IDEA at all these stunning birds were in so many sad situations such a number of rescue centers even existed, when I did realize this, I was shocked I really was, and I decided then and there I would not buy a baby from a breeder, rather I would gladly open my heart and home to a bird who genuinely needed a good home with love and care given, and I postured myself to find such a bird in need of a stable home it would be safe and hopefully happy in.

HOWEVER..... HAVING JUST ATTEMPT TO INITIATE THAT PROCESS OR EVEN ENGAGE IN A GENUINE CONVERSTATION WITH SOME OF THESE SO CALLED RESCUE CENTER REPS HAVE ENTIRELY DISENCHANTED ME ON THE VERY IDEA** and my honest humble opinion, is sincerely the notion of adoption is truly merely idea on face value.

I am a 46 yr. old grandmother who works out of the home, so there would be no issue of being alone hours and hours, we own our own home on an acre of land, we don't rent an apartement with angry nehibors on the other side of paper thin walls, we are perfectly capable of taking on a parrot of any type and all that entails financially, I honestly just cant stress what a suitable home ours would make for a parrot or any other species of pet we may have choose...I was completely open and understanding to and the need for as well as reasons behind home inspection, I had or have no such objeciton to this, willing to meet adoption fee and any shipping expense as needed, whatever criteria they typically seem to seek I was fully prepared to meet, yes we have an avian vet less than 10 miles from me actually LOL

6 months after making the decision to *adopt, and may i add blindly from a historical reference for the possible adoptee, health, behavior, disposition, etc, a complete mistery really, and I accepted these as the odds of things I could potentially face....

I cant understand what the point these rescue centers are trying to make with continuing to advertise these parrots as in need of a forever home when they seem to have no real interest in adopting the birds even to a suitable willing home happily agreeing to provide exactly what they say they are seeking for their rescues, I continue to see the exact same birds advertised for the very thing they seem to shoot down on the same sites/forums etc that I saw the first time I visited the page... I have inquired personally about opening the adoption process for four parrots, and each and every single time it was either sorry we dont ship our birds, you live out of our inspection area, I could easily provide video of our home the grounds etc.? along with a copy of my picture ID, home address included a picture of me matching my license etc.... or even one represenative sent me the adoption form and claimed 3 times she did not ever reveive it ...electronically or hardcopy snailed, and finally nothing came thru her fax to finally no further response what so ever when ask if any of the applications had found their way to her as of yet...

I honestly do not understand the point in advertising these or any animal in need of a good home to shoot a potential legitimate and suitable adoption interest is expressed......it seems to me these rescues are merely people who actually want to keep the birds for themselves or ? for whatever reason and it seems like these ads are some type of attention to possibly collect contributions, acquire additional birds for their own personal collection or I, I just dont know.

Please understand I dont mean to offend anyone who is genuinely trying to help these stunning parrots out of bad situations and hopefully into better ones but the entire frusteration of being shot down without merit, ignored, practiacally snarled at before dismissing my inquirey as if a peasant has encroached to close to the castle has truly left a bad taste and unwillingness to reach out to these centers further.....GOOD JOB?

I would happily adopt, but not under those circumstances at this point I have entirely gave up the waste of my good intention, found a newly hatched babe thats so darn ugly without a feather on its pink little bugged eyed self shes the cutest thing i have ever saw, and my deposit to a seemingly good breeder has been made....

Sorry for the venting and rambling I really just dont understand the whole point of the adoption idea when it seems there are no adoptions being adopted LOL smh.....

anyway, thank all of you for all of the information you guys have shared in this forumn Ive learned much and am very excited to be here chirping about my u2 with you all....in a few months anyway, hopefully many of you will be able to help me think of things I wouldnt probably think of when baby proofing my home in anticipation of her arrival ...

Thanks again and sorry for the rant but if someone could enlighten me on the whole adoption of not adoptables I would feel somewhat....smarter for the know LOL

CHeers!

Hello DeAnn and welcome to the forum. :)

I am so sad and disheartened to hear what all you tried to NO avail in the adoption process(es). :( I can imagine it must have left a really bad taste in your mouth.

On a very happy not, MANY CONGRATS on your future baby. :D

"... found a newly hatched babe thats so darn ugly without a feather on its pink little bugged eyed self shes the cutest thing i have ever saw..."

THAT statement of yours had my keeling over! LOL

You've come to the right place for questions and encouragement, that much I'm certain of. ;)

So...have you got a name yet for your "pink little bug-eyed babe"? :D

Hello DeAnn, glad you decided to drop in.....you've come to a good place for garnering of tidbits of information to help you succeed in becoming the proper slave to your new feathered friend.....

Since you've had the benefit of previous lurking, I'm sure you feel some kinship in the fact that many of us find solace in the use of our own soapboxes.....welcome to the forum.....

There are many great rescues(as well as bad). As a rule a rescue does tend to have a specific distance they will adopt, this is because they need to do a home visit. Pictures aren't good enough. They also rarely adopt a cockatoo to someone with no large bird experiance, and a rescue will never ship a bird.

It is fantastic that you realize how many umbrellas are neglected and go to rescues, knowing that when bringing home a baby U2 will benefit you. Welcome to the world of the hardest parrots to care for lol

Thanks everyone, so sorry my first post resulted in venting my frustration...turn rant LOL
If I could only have not pitched a tantrum right off the bat I would feel a lot better about having not griped so soon LOL, oh well...to bad I can unpost it LOL :/

JerseyWendy: No I haven't came up with any name ideas just yet, I literally only stumbled upon her FB "birth announcement" probably about 2, 2 1/2 days ago now, and worse still, she's in California, Im in WV. I dont even have an opportunity to stop by the breeders and meet her, get to know her personality or even meet her personally at all until she arrives here after being fully weaned, probably in mid Aug, early Sept. :( I do wish I could meet her and any quirks or funny habits, always helps when naming a pet..
Ill see if I can up load the pic that convinced me she was mine or maybe I can link it, Ill try, she sucking her toe and everything, totally hysterical sight to see ...

Copperarabian, thank you too, thats correct yes I did not but NOW do realize how many Cockatoos are in Rescue, or apparently remain in sad situations, I really was shocked to realize that, and I genuinely wanted to bring one into my home that needed a home.
As I stated I do realize the purpose of the home visit, agree w the reasons, and have absolutely no objectoion to this. What i do object to is looking for a forever home that will care for and love a poor bird who has already had a bad experience in his home...sometimes its neccessary to work around stumbling blocks and find a way, I see no reason why a video documenting my home would show anything less than their own two eyeballs would observe physically, happily supplied references, both professional and personal....the world isn't a perfect place if someone offters genuinely to help, at least say thank you, even if its really no thanks, dont discount an entire situation because of one small thing that could easily be accomplished by some other means driving 7 hours or something ..IDK, it doesnt really matter to me at this juncture, its certainly a non issue for me now and I wish them, their rescues all the luck.

Im sorry I thought I also included the fact I lived with a pair of Cockatoos for about 9 years, until they moved with my step mother (they were hers) when her and my Dad divorced, Fred and Wilma, U2 and Muloccun, male even LOL, I DO have large bird and Cockatoo specific experiene, I have absolutely no false ideas about these guys what so ever and am fully aware of what to expect generally in the near future, my eyes are wide open, and yes while they can certainly be challenging, everytime I think of Fred and Wilma...they were worth every single moment, Ive missed everythign about them including the high pitched non stop calling his flock home every single night, Fred HAD to see every head in his flock before he would settle down, he would climb off his perch and walk around the house to see if all members were accounted for if so, it was a perfect nights sleep that night. they have tempers and I know they hold grudges, even sulk LOL, wilma wud seek out things of my brothers, to PLAY with.....

I have experiance, I just haven't ever actually me myself personally, ever owned one of my very own. Now I do, and I couldnt be more excited I agree I think she is going to be a great benefit for me to have.

Thanks again everyone, this forum genuinely is a wealth of info, tips how to do it yourself ideas for toys, recipes and gosh everything anyone might need, thanks so much
