Would something like this be safe around birds?

It's a diy oil lamp "candle." I'm thinking it'd be safe as long as you used natural scents and stuff but I just wanted a second opinion as far as the various oils they say you can use. I've been missing having scented candles around so I'm hoping this could be a safe alternative.

Thanks in advance. Any other suggestions would also be much appreciated! :white1:

I would imagine, if it's in a different room and not putting of strong odors, it would be fine. However, if you want an air freshener anywhere within "smelling distance" of your bird, better to be safe than sorry and not use any kind of candle. You could substitute a LED flameless candle for the ambiance, and mix a few drops of a nice smelling essential oil in water and spritz that around.

I agree, anything that burns will release particulate matter !!

In another room can be ok (if there is no "drafting" into the birds room)

I like the LED and essential oil in water idea

The "modern" LED candles are so realistic, you can't even tell they're fake anymore. Made of real wax and everything. Mine are all on timers and come on/turn off automatically at night (which is awesome) and of course no risk of fire or anything dangerous for Kiwi to breathe in. I'm a fan of rose and orange essential oils (used individually). If you get one of those little 'travel' spritz bottles and fill it with water, 3-4 drops is literally all you need, so the essential oils last a very long time, smell good and are not toxic to your bird:)

They are all on timers? I want to come live at your house !! :)

To be honest though, I got mine at Target and Ross, in various sizes. They have unscented ones, which I'm sure amazon has, but I didn't look that hard. Need new batteries about every 3 or so months, but I've had the same candles for several years now.

Edit: Got a little off topic there:) I think these would work well for this specific project:

OR I saw these awesome mason jars at Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday and thought they were cute (if you like the mason jar look)- http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/sto...ason-jar-solar-light/1042094418?Keyword=mason It has a small solar panel on top and the inside of the jar lights up:)

I'm not an expert, but I would assume that anything with flame is not safe for birds, especially if they are flighted. I love candles, but after getting the birds I never used them. Led candles are good, I agree.

I miss the smell more than the looks of candle so I was hoping something like this with natural olive or coconut oil and essential oils would be ok. :/

I did a lot of research on this, because I really missed burning candles too. It's important to avoid paraffin wax, because that's petroleum-based. Wicks with metal cores are also dangerous. Everybody has to decide what is "safe" and acceptable to them, but I decided that 100% soy candles with cotton wicks and only essential oils for fragrance (I made my own) were ok for me to burn in the same room as my birds. I had difficulty getting enough scent using only essential oils, so I did eventually progress to pouring candles using the same soy wax, but adding dye and synthetic fragrance for color. I do not burn those in the same room with the birds and i make sure the fragrance doesn't carry heavily into the area where they are (by closing doors, opening windows, etc).

also: If you're going to make or buy soy candles, look carefully into the source of the soy! Lots of soy wax comes from plants grown in areas of deforested rainforest! Totally uncool! What's the point of trying to protect my Amazon with safer candles, if the candles came from a product that's involved in destroying his native habitat????
