Sad story. What is he?

Last week my doorbell rang but when I opened the front door there was no one there. Just as I was about to close the door I noticed a small, tatty cardboard box near my doorstep. I picked up the box and it felt empty so I assumed the strong wind had blown it out of my neighbours open wheelie bin. As I slipped on my shoes ready to throw the box into the bin at the end of the drive, I noticed the box had a few holes stabbed into it. I curiously opened the box and was shocked to see a pair of beady eyes peering back at me.

Inside the box was a small, pink parakeet with dirty feathers, overgrown nails, and large balls of faeces and dried blood on its feet. I immediately took the bird to the vets. The vet helped me gently wash the bird and soak his feet in warm water to remove the balls of poop. The vet suspects the blood was caused by the bird getting the balls of poop trapped or by the previous owner trying to remove them by force.

Thankfully the bird doesn't appear sick but his feet are quite sore and he's probably malnourished so I'm giving him lots of TLC. If anyone could help me identify the bird, I'd be really grateful.

(I will post a photo in a few minutes)

Here he is eating out of his watermelon feeder. I believe he's a Bourke but I'm not sure what type, I thought he might be a Rosy Bourke but he has red eyes and some yellow feathers.

Sadly the leg ring is plain.

I'm guessing someone in my area must know something about him. I feel he was probably dumped at mine by someone who knows I'm a birdy person or has spotted the aviary in my garden.

.
It looks to me like a rubino bourke parrot.

Such a lucky bird, to have found someone to care for him, unfortunate it was necessary in the first pace though :(

He /she is so pretty, how could someone treat her like that.
I am glad they left her to you.
but a note on the box would have been helpfull.
what if you had trown the box away.
I shudder to think.

what a lucky bird to find himself with you at least! he'll be on the mend and living happy now! he's gorgeous! shame people cant take proper care of their pets, but now he has a second chance!

I might not agree with just dumping your pet but at least they left him at someone's doorstep and not in the trash! I'm glad he is getting that second chance with someone who will take care of him!

What a gorgeous bird! Sounds like he will have a happy ending to his story.

Wow! So sorry for whatever s/he had to go through before meeting you, but I'm glad s/he's in good care now.

I have to ask.. Do you run a sanctuary or have a pervasive reputation as a bird rescuer or something? Otherwise, it makes me wonder how they knew to even turn t you--either they live in the neighborhood and know you have parrots, or they know you/know someone who knows you..

My first thought was a rosa Bourke's, too. If it is, more likely to be female.

Such a pretty baby!! You will have to update us with how she settles in (going female since she's pink, hey I know, but its flip of a coin)..... Have you decided on a name, or did I just miss that?

Like everyone has said, its terrible what she's experienced, but thankfully someone had a tiny bit of compassion and delivered her to a loving home!

Look forward to hearing more as you get to know her. Congrats on a beautiful adopted baby.

Thank goodness that you have the kind of reputation that someone knew you would do right by the little guy. I am so happy he has found you:)

I think it's a Rubino grass parakeet of some sort.

What a lucky bird to be dropped on your doorstep....he is stunning!

Yes, it's Rubino mutation of a Bourke's Parakeet. My mother has a Rosy Bourkes:) Gorgeous color, and I love the little watermelon feeder!

Even though he's pink we think he's a "he" so we've nicknamed him "Jesse Pinkman" (from Breaking Bad) I'm not sure if that name will stick though!
His legs are healing nicely and he hasn't had any more blood loss. He's able to make a variety of sounds including a ringing phone, wolf whistle and a door bell! I'm really shocked because I didn't think Bourke's were known for mimicking noises well.
I have no idea who dumped Jesse Pinkman but seeing as he's been taught several whistles I imagine someone loved him once...I'm concerned that he may have escaped from his original owner and was found by someone who neglected him before dumping him at my house....For this reason, I made "found lost Bourke" adverts to attempt to reunite him with anyone who might be missing him.

Ps: I'm well known in my area for fostering animals, especially birds. I also work for an animal charity that rehabilitates and releases injured wildlife...So spotting me with anything from an owl to a seagull in my garden isn't uncommon! Before now, I've had people knock on my door regarding baby birds that have fallen out of nests ect. but this is the first time someone's dumped a pet on my doorstep.

With such name be sure he doesn't start selling drugs in the neighbourhood.

Kitty,

I can't tell you what species he/she is but maybe the vet you took him to might be able to identify it or maybe he/she knows of an avian vet that could or perhaps a parrot-enthusiast club in your area.

How does he feel now? Does he interacts with you? Does he step up on your hand?
