Hi all. I was wondering if all pine cones are safe to treat and use for toys for my fids. I have been searching and can't find a definative answer. I got some pine cones from my friends yard (no pesticide) and have boiled them and they are in my oven on low baking now. I want to be 100% sure before i make toys with them though. Thanks in advance for info.

Make sure you bake them first. 20 minutes at 200ºF should do the trick :)

Ok...thanks! I boiled them first and then put them in the oven (based on a previous thread) I hope they like them! I have trees that have very small pine cones on them but I'm afraid to use them for toys because I see that hemlock branches are not good with birds. I believe these are hemlock trees so I won't take a chance. The pine cones I got from my friend are long skinny cones and I wasn't sure what tree type of tree they are from. Now let's see what kind of toys I can come up with...lol.

I once bought Raven a pinecone toy, and upon examination I noticed a little needle sharp spike (like a minuscule rose thorn) attached at the bottom of each "leaf". I don't know if it was just that species of pinecone? I had never noticed that before when looking at a pinecone. I just took my fingernail and easily broke off each one.

Some have them on the bottom some have them on the edges of the "leaves" and some don't have any just depends then type.

Pinecones are my eclectus' favourite! I stuff little treats inside and hang them up for him. Even without treats in them, he really just loves to tear them apart.
