So, it happened again, this time though it wasn't a bird. Some lady, about an hours ride from me had a big box of bird toys for sale. So, I e-mailed her and asked why she was getting rid of them. When she told me her parrot had died I asked what from because I didn't want a box of toys for my birds if they bird had some disease. Turns out the bird died from old age 65-70 years of age...best they could tell. The box has lots of LARGE bird toys in it and most of them are well used but can be used again. Will a wash through the dish washer be enough or do I need to bleach them too?

I'd use bleach too, it's always better to err on the side of caution when buying second hand bird supplies. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure you know!

I agree. It's going to be hard to bleach some of them though.

Can I just spray them down in the dishwasher with some heavy bleach before running the dishwasher? Would that work?

That would probably work............... What about letting some water run into the dishwasher and putting a couple glugs of bleach in?

You might want to do you sanitizing soak in liquid bleach, which is normally a 5% hypochlorite and water solution, while most of your powdered bleaches are normally just oxygen bleaches, which is sodium percarbonate, similar to a solid form of hydrogen peroxide and does not have the same disinfecting properties you think it does.....in fact it is made by adding hydrogen peroxide to baking powder (not soda).....

To properly sterilize with bleach, you generally have to leave the item in solution at least 10 minutes as bleach breaks down when it encounters organic compounds (hydrocarbons).....

Now if you have a pool and use chlorine in it, that is considerably stromger than your household bleaches.....

I check out craigslist now all the time. My 2 craigslist transactions turned out great!...Sassy and Cisco!!! (although the adventure with Sassy was a bit scary...soooo glad I took hubby with me or I wouldn't have stayed long enough to even see her!) I think hubby gets a little nervous whenever he sees me on Craigslist on the computer now though..lol.

(Sorry I can't answer your question about sanitizing the toys...)
