Since I am hopefully getting Echo next Saturday, I wanted to check out his current diet to see if I need to add/change anything.
His current diet is the following: (from an email I received from his current owner)
"Another box half full of speciality bird treats (Ekkie Friendly), and I will prepare about a weeks' worth of the food I typically feed him as well. In a nutshell I do a random assortment of 8 things: Pineapple, Mango, Strawberries, Blueberries, Beans (Green and Yellow), Peas (occasionally), Potatoes (Sweet), Peppers (He hates red, loves yellow and green), a dash of Pomegranate (3-4 Seeds in each meal), Carrots, Almonds, Lattice if he is dehydrated, and the occasional grapes.Seeds is wild bird food like millet, sunflower, etc."
I know I need to change his seed, any suggestions?
Also, the info about ekkies and pellets is quite confusing. He is not currently on any pellets, should I add some? If so what?
Thank you for any help, I just want to make sure I have everything ready for him and to make the transition on him as easy as possible.
He is 2 years old.

You can keep him on seeds but just limit the amount and limit the sunflower seeds, needs to be mainly smaller seeds such as millet. You can add some broccoli in the diet too and some other fruits and veggies too. They need high beta carotene foods. I don't give mine pellets cause the added vitamins is harmful to them....

I give about a tablespoon of pellets a day along with 3-4 inches of millet along with his fresh food. I use TOPS and Roudybush, the key is to make sure they are not fortified. I have heard others use Harrison's. I have two huge bowls of fresh food ready every day, one for the morning, one for2 pm, pellets and millet for a snack before bed. The more you research, the more comfortable you will be with the feeding part...check out the Land of Vos site.

Do you use the millet that is available like for smaller guys? The branches, for wont of a better word?
Is there a seed mix I should be looking for specifically, or just do a mix myself?
I have checked out the Land of Vos site and it is amazing...I just wanted to hear from y'all as well because i have alot of faith in you guys:)

Should I cook carrots first?

I do the mix myself so they have some sunflower seeds, I basically mix about 3lbs of cockatiel seeds to 20lbs of parakeet seeds to give me the right ratio. I give a tablespoon between my pair! There's no need to cook the carrot.

Perfect! I feed cockatiel and budgie seed so will be easy to mix for him. A tablespoon per day?
Also, do you feed any cooked frozen veggies?

I feed the branch millet and he gets a fair amount of frozen mixed vegetables along with the fresh stuff. I don't cook it, just dump it frozen in his bowls...it helps keep the fresh stuff fresher longer in my opinion. Been doing that for all my birds with no issues, others may give you different advice. It's a learning curve. Jmo.

I feed fresh stuff during the day and a tablespoon full of seeds during evening time but that's split between 2 ekkies. I don't feed frozen, we run to the grocery store twice a week to buy fresh produce. There was some warning about frozen veggies containing some sort of metal????

Holy cow, I never heard that! Will have to do some research as my other birds love the frozen stuff...thank you for the heads up!

Oh gosh, I never heard about metals in frozen veggies either! In fact, I researched frozen often is better than fresh because it doesn't sit around as long after picked. I'm eager to learn more about this. I tend to give Oliver mostly fresh fruits and veggies all day but at dinner time I make a warm mush using Roudy Bush adding a tablespoon of frozen corn, peas, and carrots to cool it down. He goes bonkers for his hot mush. As for seeds and pellets, I use no more than a tablespoon in his forager along with a few nuts, dry hot peppers, and dried veggies.

HI Mikey, I have been trying to find something about metal in the frozen veg, but could only find something about Birds Eye brand. Do you remember where you saw that?
