I met this awesome breeder through facebook last week, she lives about an hour away from me and we ended up talking on facebook for about 4 hours the other night. She has given me some great connections for everything from bird food to lights to even people that sell out of nest babies. Anyway, she told me about a woman that owns a store and sells huge bags of zupreem for a great price, unfortunately, she has to special order them and the store is about an hour and a half away from me and my car isn't running at them moment. I was running low on pellets and I was supposed to go to the store with a friend of mine to get some but something must have come up because it never happened. I was in a bit of a panic since I was down to about a handful of pellets and we just got 4 inches of snow last night. She contacted me and it turns out she was coming close to my way and offered to sell me 10lbs of pellets since she just restocked. :D So I went and met her and got the food and she also had something else for me, it's this little thing called a wacky whirly. It takes straws and cuts them in a spiral, she showed me that if you cut 10-15 straws and connect them together with a zip tie, it makes an awesome bird toy! She ended up giving me the cutter and a bag full of straws and ties and we have been sitting here making toys since we got home :) It's the coolest little thing, I just wanted to share. :) Kids' Crafts - Wacky Whirly Straw Kit -

Sorry for the bad pictures, my camera just decided to crap out on me so I had to use a cell phone

Wow?! Really?! It literally takes 5 minutes to make them with this thing! She said that ac moore and other craft stores sell them but she's only been able to find them online. It's probably the coolest thing I've been given in a long time and I'm sure we'll get tons of use out of it! She also said that the straw from mcdonalds are the perfect size for it ;) Billie has been playing with his for about a half an hour now and he really seems to like it, he's now playing a game where he grabs the end of a straw and tries to see how far he can stretch it across his cage :p I think it's really neat because we have always used straws when making toys but I always thought it kind of looked home made and tacky, I think this gives the straws a nice fanciness, and the birds seem to like playing with them a lot more :)

Connie is a hoot!!!!!!!LOL The birds love the straws, I make them all the time!!!!

I am so getting one of these creative toy makers, what a great idea for cutting costs on toys. These can be added to old toys to make them seem new when rotated back into the cage or playgym! Thanks for the post IcyWolf.

She's great! I seriously feel like I can't thank her enough! She has introduced me to a woman that sells the food I buy for over $1 less a pound than what I've been paying, she met me today and sold me some pellets because I was running low and can't get any from said lady above(I have to special order it, which I am doing in about two weeks), and she even gave me this awesome toy maker, which all of the birds love(I spent half the day playing with it and letting them test the results :) ). I've talked to her about a lot of different subjects regarding birds and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a bird. She's one of those true bird people, the way I feel I am, she's in it to find good matches between birds and their new human flock, not to make money, because let's face it, if you're a good, ethical, home based breeder, you're not getting rich lol. I'm really enjoying meeting all of these local bird folks, whether they are breeders, rescues, or just fid parents, it's quite enlightening to know that there are so many people near me that do it for the right reasons. As I've mentioned before, I was more of a "reptile enthusiast" for years before I started caring for birds and the more I networked, the worse the people seemed to get, it got to the point it seemed like everyone was just in it to make a quick buck and in the long run they didn't care about the animals and that's just not okay with me. I understand business, and I understand what profit margins are but when you're involving living creatures cutting corners isn't something I'm okay with.

But back to the original topic, I've been raving to people about this awesome contraption all night, even to people that don't have birds, it's so cool!

That's awesome! Puck looves straws! I might need to get him one of these.

I'm going to have to get one, too. Rowdy and Merlin both would really like that. I made some bird toys yesterday since Merlin's previous owners sent me an entire box of parts. Pete is afraid of course of the one I made him. So it's sitting next to his cage right now. I made Rowdy 2 but they are kind of big for her. She's trying to play with them anyway.

My 2 Suns love playing with straws too. They love to pull them out of a wiffle ball all the time. I liked how the Wacky Whirly made the straws more interesting. I just found it online for $1.81 at Buy.com and ordered a few of them. I have a friend at 7-11 that just ordered me a ton of multi colored Slurpee straws dirt cheap ;-)
