so I had to take Charlie back to the vet a few weeks ago because her wheezing was getting louder..he did a few cultures and He called today with the results...From what I understand there is a bacterial issue that can cause lots of issues in birds so I have to go Tuesday and pick up some antibiotics...
She will be on them for 2 weeks and then we will reevaluate her situation...hopefully once we get this under control she will be a little more lively... I have to put the meds on/in some food for her to eat, if that doesn't work I'm not sure what we will have to do. the vet doesn't want me to have to handle her and give her the meds because it can set our relationship back as far as trust building goes...wish us luck

Good luck,
when Bosley had to take meds and I didn't know him very well I also used food..
He loves toast, so in the morning when he was hungry I would put the meds on a postage stamp size piece of toast and put red palm oil on it, I wouldn't give him the rest of his breakfast till he ate it, worked well for us.

Let us know what they give her. If it's Baytril get the most concentrated and get the fruit flavored. IMO the smaller the dose the better.

he mentioned baytril and another med but I can't remember what it was. He did say they would make it sweet so she would be more likely to eat it
he was gonna make it so we would only have to give it once a day

Sandy
he had suggested the bread thing as well but Charlie isn't a huge fan, She will eat some if you give it to her but she usually drops quite a bit
he said his birds really like yogurt so we could try that as well

Anything that she likes that will absorb the med. Bosley can't stand yogurt.
Then again Bosley is.weird, he doesn't Like fruit.
Yogurt is really good to give her if she will eat it, the probiotics are beneficial during an antibiotics course.

I hope everything goes well with Charlie!!! Did Dr. Lutz tell you what's causing the bacterial issue???

He might have but I was at work...ill get all the details on tues

Sorry to hear that Charlie isn't well yet. :( Good luck with the round of meds. I hope they will clear everything up for you. :)

Get him used to eating from a feeding syringe and put the medicine in it. Also, feed lots of betacarotene-rich food (very often, it's a lack of vit A that would create the 'fertile field' for bacteria to take hold).

Ive only had her for a month or two and she came from a pretty bad situation....seeds only no ac no vet care so we are slowly working her back to health

When i have had to medicate birds I put the meds on a small peice of toast then I dab some baby food bananas on top of it. They gobbled it right up and this was for a breeder pair I was fostering, so handling them to medicate was impossible. Worked like a charm !

Got the meds from the doc for Charlie...It's Baytril
the 3 things he found were
1 enterobacter species
2 enterococcus ( non pathogenic)
3 diptheriods ( non pathogenic)
She will be on the baytril once a day for about 2 weeks
I gave her the first dose when I got home today on a small piece of honey wheat bread. She ate it without any problem

I always gave Bosley his in the morning when he is the hungriest before I gave him anything else.
