Young amazon aloof

I got my Amazon (Blue Fronted) when she was 4 months old. She is about a year old now. I live alone with her. My wife comes to visit once in a while and plays with her. However, she is very aloof. On rare occasions she will go on my finger, usually when my wife is over because she wants me to take her to her.

The rest of the time, she will either hang out on her cage, play 'footsies" or just attempt to walk around the house as if she owns it.

If I try to approach her in an effort to pick her up, she will snarl at me. She sounds like Frankenstein, "arrrrgh." She also runs away, and will go anywhere to avoid me picking her up, unless she is on the floor. When she is on the floor, all I have to do is reach down, and she will offer me her foot and hop unto my finger.

What do I do to make her want to play with me, and climb on my finger of her own desire?

I am a bit of an antisocial myself, spending hours reading, but I approach her often.

sounds like she likes your wife best, they are one person birds. Mine don't like me picking them up, only when they are off of their cage do I get allowed to. Milo loves to foot wrestle with me and occasionally let me give him neck scratches but doesn't like to cuddle, and I'm his favorite person.

No, I think she's just curious about my wife. Perhaps because at infancy she was socialized to a female. She behaves the same with my wife. Indeed, my wife does not see her much. It is just that when my wife comes over there is more activity.

Do you reward her for stepping up (on your finger)?

Find some treat that she really loves, and only give it to her when she steps up or interacts with you. She needs to associate you with good things. On the bright side it sounds like she is comfortable with you, just aloof - which is far better than scared or aggressive.

Sometimes I wish Auggie was a little more 'aloof' or would play on his own more. He's a velcro bird.

Make sure you're rewarding and fun to be with, and she'll warm up to you (I'm talking about the bird here, not the wife ... though in theory the same idea applies - but birds are much easier to figure out.)
