I got some plain no preservatives yoghurt yesterday but I'm not sure how much I can give her and how often.
Has anyone given there parrots yoghurt and do they like it.

hi,

I don't know much about AG parrots and their diets, but I do have a book on raising Eclectus parrots as pets which has helped me alot with diet queries etc, and according to that, I should not feed my Ekkie dairy as it causes diarreah, so I just stay away from any diary products. I don't know if this is true for all parrot species, like I said, I'm still an dumbie regarding the winged babies.

Hope there is someone out there with na AG who can share their experience with dairy.

Tx I've printed a list of fruit, veg & all the other bit and put it on the fridge so the family can see it as well.

Birds cannot digest dairy products. I would not recommend having him eat yogurt.

The Importance of Calcium in Our Greys’ Diets

It states that African Greys' ......................
Various foods are rich in calcium and can be included in your Grey’s diet, such as green leafy vegetables (e.g. collards or mustard greens), almonds, oranges, brewer’s yeast, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt, oats, kelp, cooked beans and peas, sunflower and sesame seeds. There are herbs which are known to be high in calcium (e.g. dandelion, parsley, comfrey, alfalfa, horsetail, oat straw and chamomile). Many of these can be served fresh, dried or sprinkled over fresh food by capsule powder

Here is a good post as well

Dairy Products and Birds

Only in moderations. There is so many other options I would not risk discomfort in my bird. These are only my opinions. Wrong or right. :)

As I stated in one of my previous posting

Yipe AG can eat yoghurt, in moderation of course
Mishka eats a teaspoon of plain unpreserved yoghurt each night after dinner as a treat.

Dairy Products and Birds

Some milk products do not contain lactose, such as cottage cheese and other types of cheese. Generally, it is thought that it is safe to offer yogurt and cheese, although products that contain lactose are probably safe, if offered in small amounts. Interestingly, live culture yogurt does contain lactose when it is produced; however the live organisms in the yogurt consume the lactose, eventually removing the lactose entirely from the yogurt before it is consumed!

Safe.

I don't give diary products to my birds regularly, but have had to use yogurt to medicate my mitred conure. It was the only way I could get him to *willingly* swallow the meds without flinging them around - out of his mouth. He got so used to the taste of the medicated yogurt that it tasted funny to him when I offered him plain yogurt (i.e. no meds).

Plain yogurt, particularly plain greek yogurt with live cultures is best. In moderation.

My birds love cheese and yogurt, in moderation, of course. My Blue Crown can't eat any dairy, however--it gives him gut issues.

Like Monica stated already, it is FINE to give your parrots all natural plain yogurt especially after treating with antibiotics!!!!! When you treat with antibiotics, it kills the good and the bad bacteria. By feeding yogurt, your replenishing it. And YES I will give my birds plain yogurt in moderation!!!! I even give it to my dogs and cats after antibiotic treatment. My vet even suggest it, same with my avian vet before when I was treating with antibiotics.

I went home last night to read the part on bad foods (in my Ekkie book), and according to that, lactose is the "bad" stuff, but they say that yogurt and cheese is safe.

I guess the best way is to read the ingredients on the package first.

I just generalized it after I read it the first time. #oops

Birds are Lactose intolerant but yogurt and cheese have very little lactose left in them.
My vet also recommends yogurt when antibiotics are used.
