YNA or Noble Macaw

What is everyone’s experience with Yellow Naped Amazons and Noble Macaws? I have done my research but also looking for real life experiences that people have had with the different bird species. A rescue near me has a Noble Macaw that has been a plucker for a while and it’s available for adoption and then someone is rehoming a YNA near me.

The amazon will be a bit more difficult to care for, behavior wise.

The macaw will be a bit more nippy and vocal.

Size differences too. The amazon needs a bigger cage. Do you want a medium parrot or small parrot?

I have an IRN right now so looking to get a bigger bird. This would be my first macaw or amazon.

If you haven’t seen the noble macaw in person, they are small. Not far off from your IRN’s body size, but stockier and not so long of a tail. Definitely NOT a bigger bird.

The size isn’t really a big factor in determining what step I take next. Just trying to see what people’s experiences have been between the two species. I would like on that is hand tame and will interact with me but also be friendly to my spouse as well.

I have zero macaw experience, large or small, but I do have the sweetest YNA on the planet- for me, and a select few. She would eat the liver of most other people. That being said, it is entirely a matter of the bird's preference. The only way to know is to meet them and spend time with them. Both of you. In my experience, birds are much better at choosing us than we are at choosing them. You'll know. This doesn't mean you can't develop a bond, but it's much easier when they choose you.

My apologies, but I’m a bit confused by your contradictory posts about size. If it’s a factor, go with the YNA. If it’s not, then I recommend meeting both and seeing which one chooses you, rather than you choose the bird.

The bond is always better when the bird chooses the human - you’ve seen Harry Potter, I assume? The wand chooses the wizard Harry. Go the other way and it doesn’t always work out well.

What I was meaning by that is that between the IRN and the two species list, they are going to be bigger then my IRN. I was meaning that between the YNA and the Noble Macaw, the size difference wasn’t a very big factor between picking one over the other. Looking for a bigger bird then my IRN.

Ok, that’s a bit clearer, thank you. As I noted previously, noble macaws aren’t bigger. They’re going to be about the same size as your IRN, They are just a little stockier.

I’m with chris and saxguy, MUCH better to meet both birds if possible and let the bird do the choosing. Of course there’s always the chance both may choose you, or neither.

Sorry I guess I’m really not being much help am I??!

(PS saxguy, jeez I sure am glad I don’t have any liver eaters in my house \o/ !!)

So the Noble Macaw is going to be at a rescue and would be more open to meeting before adopting while the YNA is from a private party and would have to purchase it beforehand to meet it. Thanks everyone for your responses.

That makes your decision for you. You’re getting the Macaw. Anyone who says “pay first before you meet” is a scammer.

That YNA does not exist.

Scammer selling birds online and craigslist is insanely common, we get posts here all the time about them. They will say stuff like what you’ve seen: give me your money first, THEN meet the bird. Anyone genuinely selling a bird, and wanting the best for their bird, will vet potential owners and insist they meet the bird first.

I mean as in pay for it when I meet the bird to pick it up. Not pay ahead. Could of worded that differently. I doubt the owner would let me come meet it in their house and then if it doesn’t click with me not purchase it.

If it’s not a scam, and the bird is real, I’d pass. I’d never buy a bird first without meeting it first. That‘a sketchy. It sometimes means they are hiding something, serious behavior issues for example.

And yes, many people would welcome potential buyers to their home to meet the bird. I did with my boy, a craigslist adoption.

I agree with you Chris. If not a total scam, it sounds like a flipper to me. Might be a great bird, or like you said, might have serious issues. They have no concern for the bird, just about the money.

Welcomed to the forum! Thanks for consideration of rescue and re-homed parrots! So many need a good home! Thrilled to hear that you aren't turned off by the appearance of a plucker!!! I have a mild plucker, she is such a great bird, such a comedian! I'm so glad one of these will get a chance at a great home.

Wish I could offer ideas on which would be a better fit for you. But it's a good idea to meet both, and see who you have a connection with. Look forward to hearing your choice and your stories. And all about your IRN too. ;)!

I actually have a Parakeet, two Cockatiels, and the IRN. The IRN was a slight plucked when I first got him but he hasn’t plucked since the first month I have had him and it’s been almost two years since I have gotten him. I am leaning more towards the Noble Macaw just because it comes from a trusted rescue and she gives the most accurate information that she knows about it.

Well I gotta say thanks a lot for telling me all about the Noble Macaw, now I want one too (this from the girl who almost got sucked in by a moustache parakeet on the weekend - run away Martina, run away!!!)

Nobles are not very common. You’d have a much easier time finding hahns macaw. Same species, just different subspecies. Very little difference.
