Valentino - Red Fronted Macaw - Hatched August 12, 2012
Valentino has been back home nearly a month and I do understand it can take a while for him to adjust. He has been though a lot as have I and now that it is just the two of us I feel that this is not enough.

I would like to add a mini macaw to our flock and have decided that the Yellow Collard Macaw would be a very good fit with us. It has been a huge challange to find anyone with the YCM so I am wondering if anyone has any information of any breeders that breed YCM. I would be interested in adoption as well if there is any YCM's in need.

A couple of weeks ago I attended a bird fair in Ohio that had a bird auction. I have never been to a bird auction in my life and I was very hesitant to "bid" on the YCM "Lucky" that was up for auction. I did not have enough experience with this type of enviroment to take a chance. I was afraid of disease and too much unknown with this situation. However the venders had a lot of toys and I was able to get some nice toys for Valentino.

It is not easy with all things parrot since I moved to Northern Indiana. The bird club out there is very small, there is only one avian vet to choose from and I feel like a bit like I have been thrown back in time with the knowledge of parrot care and nutrition.

Hi There, I know exactly which bird fair you are discussing, and although the individuals that run the fair are spectacular, many of the individuals who have their birds in the auction are not reliable. I am very pleased you chose not to bid there. Although, with some of those prices, its hard to turn down, it is much better to go through a breeder where you can intact with your bird and research the breeder information. I highly suggest contacting rescues around your area as well as some in Ohio. Good Luck!

I appreciate your understanding. I would like to adopt from a rescue if possible but I also need to satisify what would be a good fit here. I am so out of my element in my new state. Indiana is a lot different than where I came from. I did not realize how fast paced the twin cities were until I moved to North east Indiana. I am growing to like it out here but feel somewhat isolated with trying to meet people that have the same interests as myself. You can only talk about IT for so long before you want to be around people who have like interests. The parrot community is very small out here but they are wonderful people who are easy to know and always willing to help.

The Ohio bird fair was a first for me. We don't have bird fairs or auctions in Minnesota. Our bird club has a lot of venders and breeders who can help you with all your parrot needs and once a month they have a meeting in which the members and guests can come and shop shop shop all that is parrot. I do remember a smaller fair that use to take place in Stillwater in which breeders/venders from WI, Iowa, southern MN would gather but I remember it was mostly smaller parrots and if the breeder had larger parrots they had pictures and the baby parrots were sold by face to face business and word of mouth. I have noticed over the years people stopped taking their birds to meetings, breeders keep their aviaries closed and when you do visit their business a lot of protocals were in place to keep their flock safe. For me the Ohio bird fair is what it use to be like in the late 90's early 00's for me. It was so nice to be able to chat with the venders, rescues and breeders about parrots. I enjoyed the openess and friendlyness of everyone I encountered. Although the auction broke my heart I was very pleased with the Ohio bird fair.

During the auction a Flame macaw was auctioned off. The owner was a woman who came up and took her bird out of the cage and played with him, everyone watched, she then put the bird back into his beautiful black wrought iron cage and walked away. I was close enough to see that her eyes teared up and she was heartbroken. I learned that sometimes things happen and people will use the auction to sell their parrots because they can't afford to keep the parrot or need the money so badly they auction. My heart broke watching the events unfold for the woman and her Flame macaw. Because of how close I came to the same situation myself I nearly cried in public because I could relate to well with how the woman was feeling.

Maybe at a future event that we both attend we can meet up. You can never have too many bird loving friends.

Absolutely! I remember the macaw, very pretty. I would be happy to meet you sometime :)
