Just poking around our local rescue's website this morning and saw this beautiful major Mitchells up for adoption! I have NEVER seen one for sale, much less adoption before. Pretty rare birds. I am NOT in any way, shape or form interested in adopting this bird, but out of pure curiosity, anyone know much about them as pets? Any reason they are so rare? Clearly they are very attractive birds, must be some reason they never caught on it the pet trade:

That is an absolutely stunning bird in beautiful feather. They appear to have visual characteristics similar to other cockatoo species in one package! (I spy Goffins in the region of beak/nare coverings/eyes)

Some of the descriptive terms suggest a very challenging bird, but that is the case with most toos.

I have no clue why the Major Mitchells never caught on at least in the U.S!

Shame you don't live closer Scott, as I can think of few people who'd fulfill the requirement of extensive cockatoo experience necessary to adopt this beautiful bird more than you have! She/he is really a stunner.

Major Mitchell’s. You see them occasionally. I see them on birdbreeders.com sometimes.

They are beautiful but one might argue they are one of the cockatoos least suited to indoor living. I’ll be lying if I said I remember why but it’s an argument I’ve seen repeated a couple times.

Thanks April! Don't tempt me, or I'd be there in a heartbeat! :)

The Major Mitchell's cockatoo are absolutely stunning. They are probably my favourite cockatoo species.

According to Rosemary Low, they are probably the species of white cockatoo that is most unsuited to captivity, especially indoors.

There is a charming story of Cookie - a MM cockatoo that lived at Brookefield Zoo for 83 years and passed away in 2016.

I clicked and it said "page not found"

"C'mon now April....Mr Kiwi would just LOVE for you to get him a feathered buddy! At least if he is anything like my green dino ;)
