Would you consider this surprising for an Amazon to do this?

It always surprises me when my bird does this.

She sometimes goes to the bottom of the cage and starts ripping at the newspaper until she finds the perfect sized piece. Rips many pieces until she gets the right size.

She then takes it tot he top of the cage, rolls the newspaper piece up, and uses it to pet her head.

Just wondering if this is something typical of an Amazon or what you would expect from most of them to do things like this.

Variations of that is very common. Whether, with her own nails or any number of objects that will do the job. Yup! Amazons do that and a bunch more. Amazons are very intelligent and have a very long list of capabilities.

Wow, I've never even heard of them doing that, tho 'Boats says its common. Pretty intelligent bird you got there!

Wrench! That's because your Salty has so well trained his staff in providing him with all the attention those odd area's need. He does not have to do any of that manual labor himself. :D

Oh boy, has he ever. We human slaves are very well trained.

What cute and sweet to see this!
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Toon does this as well.
He is no Amazon but a African Grey parrot.

My YNA uses a number of objects both modified and unmodified to scratch his neck.
He will take a peanut (he does not eat them) and scratch his neck for a while. When it stops doing the job he will give one end of the peanut a CHOMP to crack the end and make it sharper thus a better scratching tool.
He also likes to use mini carrots to scratch with.
None of my Zon's have ever used rolled up newspaper, that is amazing.
lot of work going into that .
