Parrots
a 1 yr old african grey
Hi all,

I have an african grey, and was contemplating getting a blue and gold macaw. They would have separate cages, but i was wondering are there any issues i should be considering before bringing the macaw in? would they get on together? are there any health issues?

If anyone has feedback / experience / advise on homing both an african grey and a blue n gold macaw, i would really appreciate your feedback and tips.

many thanks
Pepe.

First of all.. :jumping40WELCOMEE!!!:jumping40

Ironically, I have had a Grey and a B&G at once. They did NOT like eachother, but it all depends on the birds. They could love eachother, hate eachother, tollerate one another.... so again, it depends on what they decide. You need to remember to quarantine the new parrot, in a separate room at first, while you get the new bird a clean bill of health and so forth. I honestly don't think it would be a problem, you need to spend enough time with both of them if they don't get along.

Good luck!

P.S: We love pics of the fids :)

hi Cass, many thanks for the information. I've heard about the quarantine period, but dont know much about it. could you elaborate more - like how long they'd need to be apart and any other details?

By the way - how do i add pics to my avatar etc?

thank you :)

Hello PTP and welcome to the forum, as all birds behave differently and its really hard to say how any two birds will interact with one another, I would have to say from my own experience of seeing both species in close proximity on many occasions, more than likely not, there are always those odd couples out there, but I think in this case it would just be wishful thinking, thats not to say that you couldn't have both as companion birds in the same household, just direct interaction between the two would be wisely discouraged.....enjoy your stay here, its a great forum :)

I have a African Grey (17 years old) I have a 16 year old Mini Macaw (adopted at 11 years old) and a 5 year old Greenwing Macaw (hand raised from 5 weeks old). My Grey does not like either Macaw. The Greenwing likes both the other birds but they don't like him. Some times I take the Grey and the Greenwing to the beach together but by the time I get home they are usually both mad at me. Go ahead and get the B&G but don't expect them to become friends, although you never know.

To get yourself an avatar picture:Click on User CP, in the side bar there will be a thing called Settings and Options, under the setting's and options, there will be a little link that says Edit avatar. Wen you cick that there will be two options: Option 1 - Enter the URL to the Image on Another Website Option 2 - Upload Image From Your Computer. The avatar picture has to be 100 by a 100 pixels, or 62.5 KB.

The quarantine period is ATLEAST 30 days. Maybe longer if health isues apear. Heres a link to some info: should i quarantine my 2 year old green cheek conure that i got from the pet store?

Hope that helped!! :D

Welcome to the forum!

As stated above - there really isn't any way to know if 2 parrots will like each other. They're all individuals and like people, some just don't get along. We have 3 birds - Jade, the RFM, is queen bee and the extrovert of the group. She's doesn't exactly dislike the others, but she's jealous and makes sure they know she's alpha. Ruby, the CAG, is the youngest (5 months old today!) and still developing her personality - she's kind of an instigator. She wants to be friends with Max and Jade, but right now is just trying to keep up with her big "sister". Max, the Alexandrine, doesn't like the girls and is basically a grouch and stays on his perch or my son's shoulder.

All that said, none of them are really aggressive toward each other. There is some squawking if personal space is infringed upon, but there has been some social grooming between the girls, so I'm still hoping.

thanks alot everyone for your valuable feedback. looks like it would be a good option to get the BnG macaw. will update once that goes ahead.

thanks again :)

I know my grey would find the loudest most annoying sound the macaw made and do it all day long!! 3 years ago I had a Jenday conure staying with me for a few months, Doorknob(CAG) still does the terrible sound that bird made.
I think he just likes getting under my skin...
