Would it be safe to have a bird shipped?

I have been trying to narrow down which breeder and bird I to get. I am looking for a green cheek conure but I found a breeder that seems to be pretty amazing and from the reviews seems to really know what she's doing but I am afraid to have him shipped from Georgia to Nebraska. Has anyone had any birds shipped? Can you share your experience? How exactly does it work? I mean I know it would be shipped Delta to the Airport here for me to pick up but that about all I know? What type of carrier is normally used? What should I expect overall? Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing

No direct experience, but I didn't want your question to slip off the list of new posts! I believe a cat or dog crate is used.

It is definitely safe and convenient. It is the usual way in which people get birds from out of our area. Delta is the one most breeders use. They use their program specifically designed for shipping pets, including exotics. The breeder will arrange a time with you and with the airline. You go to your airport's designated area to pick up at that time. Show your ID, sign some paperwork, and take your new bird home. It's very simple. Your breeder will tell you about all the arrangements and what to do.

I've done it several times over the years. The only drawback that comes to mind is the extra cost of shipping (nearly $200 last I checked). Especially for a species as popular as Green Cheeks, surely you can get one within driving distance?

Im picking up my bird from GA but taking her on the plane with me but only because Im going to be there anyway. The biggest issue with shipping (and I concur, all the input I've gotten is that it's routinely done and the birds do fine) is the heat. Delta can suspend shipping of live animals when the temperatures get too hot. Discuss this with your breeder so that you know what to expect. The shelter has shipped a few birds to other sanctuary or shelters. The people at our local airport are animal lovers in that office and will talk/socialize with the animals while they wait for their flights or if there are delays.

The process is very simple and safe. I wouldn't worry about doing so myself with any of my birds.

I've had 4 birds shipped to us, along with 3 puppies over the years. They take great care of the animals nowadays, and they all arrived safely. Most were flown via Delta airlines.
