Worried about passing on my illness

Hey everyone,
I was diagnosed yesterday with a bacterial infection in my lungs, sinuses, throat, and ears. I'm very very ill.

I've been washing my hands frequently, but I am scared that Kyo might get sick. I've been keeping a close eye on her, and she's been acting normal, but you all know how quick I am to jump to conclusions at the first sign of trouble.

is this even reason`for concern?

So very sorry to hear of your illness!

There are several Bacterial based illness that can 'cross-over' between humans and parrots. I would suggest a quick Web Search and I am certain that by the time I complete this response that JW may have a specific site for you to visit.

The basic, more common human bacterial infections do not cross-over. At this point, web search the infection you have.

Remember to stay on the medication until they are gone and check with your Doctor regarding taking a probiotic once you are well.

I had something similar for many months off and on last year, never been so sick in my life, antibiotics extreme. My birds were affected too just because I could not take care of them and they are still unwell although getting stronger since I got the best bird seed online. My little sister fed them outdoor bird seed and now Pearls has yellow feathers and the beginning stages of fatty liver disease, she laid and laid eggs too like 10 to 15 of them inside of a few months. Hope you get better this leaves you feeling awful for months especially if you have an underlying illness.

I just want to say how sorry I am! As someone dealing with chronic illness I know how rough being sick can be. It can also effect your animal care but I'm sure you will find a way through all of the challenges! I don't know exactly how "dangerous" the bacterial infection is for Kyo but if it's gone on awhile undiagnosed, there's a good chance she's already been exposed. There's also a good chance her immune system fought it off (or it wasn't even a bacteria species that effects parrots) whereas yours wasn't so lucky. I would keep up the basic hygiene but I don't think it's something to stress about and anyway, the more you worry and stress the worse you will feel! I hope you get better soon

Hope you feel better soon, and as others have said, follow the doctor's protocol, and don't hesitate to check back or seek a second opinion if there is little improvement.

Might want to contact an avian vet to learn more of the biochemistry of transmission to Kyo. IIRC, we are most contagious in the early stages of infection, prior to diagnosis and treatment.
