My Goffin , Yoshi and I are working on recall training.
I have yet to find a treat that he will take from my hand. I have tried EVERYTHING ! Every food item I see he really likes , I save for training , but it just doesn't matter if he hasn't seen those things for weeks , he just won't take anything ! I have resorted to verbal praise and pets , he seems to be fine with that , but there is no way I can use a higher value treat for the hard recalls , like calling him to come when he is upstairs or when he needs to find me upstairs in the bedroom. I know he likes to drink from a water bottle , some was wondering what I can use in liquid form as a treat that is safe to use during our training sessions.
Thanks :). :white1::white1:

Anything. Diluted juice (make sure theres no added sugar), you can always use a blender and make a birdie shake with some of his favorites :)

Has he never taken food from your hand, or just when youre training?

Funny you posted this. I have the exact same problem with my Goffin Kia. She's just not interested in treats when we're training. I just do lots of praise.

He has taken his pellets , but those are too big to use. He usually drops them too. I have yet to find something he will take and is small enough to be used during training. That's why I figured liquid might be better.
Thanks.

I should have said in my last post , I wish he would take something and actually eat it !!

I used to have that problem with Rosie, after I removed seeds from her diet she started accepting treats during training. Her favorites are eggs, noodles, walnuts

Training treats that I use are...a piece of a Cheerio, half a pine nut or pistachio, an oat kernel, or hulled sunflower seed. The best treat of all is praise & love mixed with your excitement for doing what you've asked.

I have offered him Cheerios , he knows what they are , but he refuses to take them from my hand , that's the problem.
I tried sunflower seeds ,pine nuts , etc....no dice !
He does get excited when I get excited about his recalls and other things :)
I just wanted to have a higher value treat for those special times he does something hard or whatever....I don't think I can get anymore squeaky or sound more excited , lolol. But I guess that might have to do , lolol.
I just wonder why he isn't interested in anything I give him ?
It's not like he hasnt seen these things before. I have seen him eat them !!
If its not a pellet , he acts like I am handing him a lit match !!!! Idk...

Does he even eat those seeds, treats and nuts? Here's how I get all my birds to take treats from my hand. We put in a few in their bowl on a daily basis until they get excited when we bring them their bowl. Then we stop giving it to them in their bowl. I bring one with my hand to them to get their reaction, they usually go for it right away. IF they don't, they don't get any treat for the day and we try again the next day. It usually works the first time around though....

Scrambled eggs? :D. He might just be in training mode and not want treats. It might work to give him a big treat afterwards. I do that for baths here. After they get a bath they get a big avi cake!

When I have time today , I'm going to try to get a video of Yoshi and I when I'm offering him various treats. Anything I offer him I have I given him before , I guess they just look differently when in my hand ? I just dont know why he is so hesitant . He surprised me yesterday by wanting to take a sip of my Snapple Tea ! He didn't get any , but I wanted to see if he would actually get close to the bottle , and he did !
So that's why I wanted to know what kinds of fluids can he have as a treat.

MikeyTN , that is a good idea , I'm going to try that , thanks.
Sulphiria , I may have to resort to treating afterwards if things to work out with Yoshi taking treats from my hands. Very good idea, thanks :)
SpiritBird , also a good point , I haven't thought about trying brightly colored treats.
Maybe Yoshi has a favorite color , lol. He always surprises me , that's for sure :)
Thanks.

I will have to skip lunch today and make sure I'm hungry .
I think I will try scrambled eggs , noodles , and a few others , see how he does with those , lol.
Mmmmm, mmmm , good :)

You could try popped milo. Rome goes crazy for popcorn, so I started using popped milo instead. Its nice because its so small and I get the same reaction from her.

what is popped milo? is it a grain you buy then pop or is it something you buy already popped at a pet store or health food store? thanks Alison and sweetie pie:D
