ANY fumes, no matter how harmless to mammals, can kill birds. Remember the canary-in-the-coal-mine "tradition"? I'm so glad you're reaching out.
So your friend who has had the Amazon for 40 years probably hasn't had any issues because his pots/pans haven't heated-up to the appropriate temperature to release the fumes (if he has used anything Teflon in the past 40 years); a lot of the time in cases where birds have died, it's because someone has left a pot/pan on the stove and forgotten about it
This is essentially what happened to my conure. I had a Tefal air fryer, had used it loads of times with him around not realizing that it was Teflon based (Tefal should have given me a hint) it never had an issue, then the time I used it forgetting to put any oil in he got sick the next day and went over the weekend with all the airway symptons appearing (tail bobbing and such). I can't see anything else causing it so I point at that. Better to be safe than sorry!
I also noticed food tastes a lot better now I use non teflon based cookware (ceramic specifically with labels stating no PTFE or PFOA in it) and no odd smells coming from the kitchen, save for whatever I'm cooking!
